The past couple of days my truck will not shut down immediately after I turn off the key. I turn off the key & all the accessories shut off but the engine will keep running for about 5 to 10 seconds. It will not do it all the time but seems to be more frequent with the hot humid weather we have had since last thursday. As a matter of fact it started to do this last thursday afternoon. Anybody got any suggestions?
It really strange to shut down & get out of the truck & the engine is still running. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Since diesels do not have spark ignition to turn off, it has to be shut down with fuel being stopped from injecting. Look for a defective valve or switch not working. Perhaps someone else can provide exact wiring / switch / valve recommendations and locations that has a manual.

Only two things come to mind. The ignition switch is hanging up, or both the PCM and IDM power relays are sticking (not likely, as they are both fed by the same circuit).

I lean toward the ignition switch.

The ignition switch has 4 separate circuits coming off it that are powered when in run. If one of those isn't switching like it should, you could have the symptoms you are seeing.

If it gets worse, I'd recommend replacing the ignition switch (located alongside the steering column just under the instrument panel.)

I have had this same problem since I connected my fan and in line temp switch for the tranny cooler. If the switch activates for the cooler when I shut off the truck, the engine keeps running for about 15 seconds. I figure I have picked power from the wrong power wire. I have also wired up a manual switch for the fan. If I put the switch on, the truck runs until I turn off the switch to the tranny cooler fan. Been doing this about a year now.

You know WB7E, you may have hit the nail on the head. I just installed an auxilery fan on my transmission cooler the week before. Mine is manual 'Off-On' control. I will check the wireing. Also, I noticed yesterday when I turned the manual swith off for the fan I did not have the problem. Will check out today. Thanks for refreshing my memory. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

OK, Now I am wondering 'WHY'. All I did was install a fan in front of the AC Condenser & in front of the Transmission cooler & hard wire an 'OFF-ON' switch into my 'Add-on' Fuse junction box. I have other things wired into the same box & no problems when I use them. Only when I turn on the cooler fan. Hmmm, wonder what is up with that? Still confused. I drove the truck today with the fan turned off & it did not delay on shut down. I am going to run the fan tomorrow & see what happens. Very interesting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Well today was a warm day & so I ran the truck with the cooler fan on & off. When the fan switch is ON, the truck will keep running for about 3 to 5 sec when I turn the key OFF. With the fan switch OFF the truck shuts down as it should. What I did notice, I have a lighted switch for the fan, when I turn the switch OFF the light goes out immediately. When I leave the fan switch ON & turn the truck off with the key, the lighted switch goes slowly dim & when it goes out, the truck shuts down. I have my CB & other electronics wired to the same fuse panel & they do not go slowly OFF nor do they effect the engine shut down. This is really confusing. I do not know what is causing this condition. Anybody have any ideas? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/warmsmile.gif

It sounds like you may have some voltage feeding back into the ignition circuit as the fan spins down. It must be enough to keep relays latched in or whatever. It could be the type of motor you have in your cooler is acting like a generator as it spins to a stop. Maybe a diode in the circuit is needed to prevent feedback. Without details on how you wired it, that's about all I can think of.

I bet Ford_Forgotton (Daryl) could figure this out. He's the wiring guru here.
