Sometimes when i turn the knob to 4H it does not engage. i used to engageing 4wd from a stop in neutral. should i be rolling to put into 4H?

Sounds like you're talking about ESOF, yes you really need to be moving forward for the hubs to properly engage. IIRC, up to around 45-50MPH.

The operators manual suggests it needs to be rolling in gear below some max speed. Can't recall what it is right now. That's the way I shift mine and nary a hitch so far. Maybe someone will chip in with the max speed. To shift into 4lo it needs to be rolling verrryyy slowly and in neutral.

It won't go into 4LO unless you are stopped, in neutral, and IIRC you have to have your foot on the brake.

Also, the manual states that the ESOF feature may take 45 seconds to engage.

4H- you need to be moving, 4L- you need to be stopped, with your foot on the brake and the gear selector in N.
