After a seriously botched engine swap my son gets his 2000 f250 back from the shop after having to have it towed home discovered it was only partially reassembled. When he turns the key on after a few seconds diesel starts to run out of the water pump inlet. What would cause that?

A cracked injector cup is one possibility. When the key is turned on, the fuel pump is engaged. The only real communication point between the fuel system and the cooling system is in the heads. The injector cups separate those two zones.
