I have decided that instead of parting out my old flatbed, I will put a small diesel in it for off road and non towing use, only a loaded flatbed. I would like to use a 4 or maybe six cylinder diesel, like a cummins 4bt. Does anyone have any reccomendations for me, like a good engine to use and a good price to get it at?

I want about 100 hp, 150 tops.

Considering it actually came in that platform, it would probably be easiest to swap in a 6.9. Yes, it's over 150 horsepower, 180 I think, but I don't think you'll really mind the "extra" power.

that weighs so much though, and I think I want a four cylinder turbo. I do agree that it would be an easy conversion, but I am looking for high economy, like 25 to 30. I think a 4bt would do it. for a 6.9, I mihgt as well keep my current truck.

I wonder what the fuel economy of a 6.9 turned back to your stated horsepower would be. Big diesel motors often get better economy than small ones in the same application. For instance this often holds true between the 5.9 Cummins and the 8.3 Cummins, at the same power the big one will burn less fuel.
