I have a very nice 1992, F-350, crew cab, 4x4, 5-speed manual, with the 460V8.

The truck is in awesome shape, but the motor is basically junk.
Very poor mileage (imagine that?) and very poor power for simple light load pulling, and it almost can't pull anything such as a loaded 2-car gooseneck.

I see everyone recommends a Cummins 5.9L 12 valve for a easy, simple swap. Others recommend the 7.3L IDI.

I want to swap something in that doesn't require much electrical work.

I was wondering:

Are there any alternitives besides the 7.3L and the 5.9L?
I would like some info on possiable Cat, International, Perkins, Detroit, exc...........alternative options.

I want a awesome diesel truck that is different, yet powerful, and gets good mileage.

The diesel conversion will start this summer.

Thanks in advance for any help.

If you got the money and time you can do anything. As far as ease and economy I would go with a 6bt cummins and a nv4500. You would get good fuel economy and easy to get parts for. You could run a 6v53t detroit that would be cool but economy wouldnt be good. A 4-53 would get you better mpg but power would be down.

I did the Cummins swap from a 460, and wiring wise, it was quite simple, but I used a 1st generation motor, you can get into quite the wiring headaches on the later model motors, after 98 I believe. For simplicity of installation, a 6.9/7.3 IDI or the Cummins are the choices, the others either require a lot of fabricating, as in motor mounts, tranny mounts, bell housing, possible oil pan clearance problems, hood clearance problems, firewall clearance problems. If your truck were 2wd, it would make things much easier, and the options a bit better, but still require fabricating skills. I did all the mounts and brackets for my conversion, but the parts all could have been bought. 4wd makes it harder in that you have to be able to either convert to the existing trans or the t-case.

Easiest and reliable easy to maintain motor.... Someone posted a link awhile back it was an excellent site 100% dedicated to the Cummins swap. Lots of good resources at that site. Maybe someone will post it.
