Could someoone please explain to me how can a V10 powered SD with 457lbft of torque apply more torque to the ground that a 570lbft PSD?

Giving the gearing of 3.73 vs 4.10 or 4.30, does the engine rev have to do with how much hp/torque is applied?

Torque is just a manipulation of horsepower, it's a different way of looking at it. It is defined by the formula
HP = Torque * RPM/5,252

Check out this link too, it has a good explanation.

All kinds of possibilities, but not normal. Assuming that everything is equal between the two (except for the engine), the PSD will provide more torque.

If gear ratios are different between the two then torque delivered to the ground could go to the V-10. The gears change torque delivered from the engine to the ground with a related and opposite change in rpm.

GReg, actually Horspower is a numerical figure based off of torque. The way to remember, torque is an actual physical force. Horespower is just a number based of a numerical equation that is derived from knowing the force and rpm.

Think of it this way, you don't apply hosepower to a bolt with a horsepower wrench, you apply torque with a torque wrench. Now let's say we apply 1 foot pound of torque and manage to spin the bolt 5,252 revolutions in one minute. We have then managed to achieve 1 horsepower worth of work.

So, then why did we purchase a $4500 engine adder if the V10 can apply more torque and pull better?

It can't. Where are you getting your specs from?

That's a good way to think of it, Hammer. And "horsepower wrench" ... too funny! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Take a look at where the V10 generates its maximum torque, and how much fuel you have to shove down its throat to get to that power level, then compare those figures with the PSD ...

Don't know about the numbers of it.
But here's an experience for ya.

2 weeks ago, we took a 465 mile trip.
Myself: '01 F350 DRW PSD 4:10 pulling a 26' TT (trailer is somewhere around 7K lbs loaded), bike & generator in bed (around 500lbs).

Traveling companions: Some sort of new model motor home w/ the Triton V10. He's about 25' or so. He was also pulling a 6x12 enclosed trailer w/ 3 small bikes in it.

Set my cruise on 61, truck would never deviate from there.
Uphill, downhill, flat, didn't matter.
Anytime we'd encounter the slightest hills, or grades even, that V10 would wind up 1/2 mile back. And he could never use OD.

When we'd stop for fuel ...
I thought I was buying a lot until I saw his bill!

Granted, this is kind of like an apples to oranges comparison, but I have no doubt that the V10 isn't even in the same league as the PSD. Ask anyone who owns one what they get for fuel milage under all conditions. Bet it isn't as good as your PSD.
