I am interested in purchasing a locker for my truck
i was trying to figure out what type of differential i have what is the best way to figure this out
Also do i have to buy a locker for my front and rear

You can buy lockers for either the front or rear or both. It all depends on what you plan on doing with your truck.

just want the best traction for on road use 90% of the time i was thinking jsut putting one in the rear do you know how to figure out what kind of rear diff i have

You have a Ford (sterling) rear axle, 10.5" ring gear diameter on your truck, and either a Dana 50 or Dana 60 front axle. Look for the build sticker on the axle tube on the front end for a sticker.

This is the sticker from my old D-50 front axle. On my D60 the big # is D-282-B.

You don't have to put a locker in the front unless you're planning on some serious rock crawling. In fact, you may not like it for daily driving unless you get the typ that can be unlocked.

First check to see if you already have a limited slip differential. Look for a metal tag under one of the bolts holding the rear diff cover on. There will be either a 3L73 or 3 73 on the tag, with the former being a Ford limited slip unit and the latter being an open differential. (The numbers are the gear ratio.)
