I have a question about the sonnax valve and spring kit. I have been having problems with the 3-4 shift under load and I was told that if you keep the springs but replace the stock valve, things would go back to normal. It is just under decent acceleration that the shift to OD does a "romp, romp" type deal. When just bummin' around, it is a good firm shift. If I take the valve out, I should still have a good shift since the springs are still in right?

I just ordered a 80hp/Economy tune from Jody a few minutes ago. Is that added line pressure necessary when you bump up the HP? I put this kit in to preserve the trans, not tear it up.

If anybody has advise on what to do, I would GREATLY appreciate it. I am starting to get real nervous about doing damage to the transmission. I know they are almost fragile anyway.

If anybody could chime it, that would be super. Again, what thoughts are on keeping springs, but putting the stock valve back in the VB.

Thanks!!

I'm no way an expert, how ever I just called Jody this morning and ordered the 80 hp econo tune, in one of our conversations I asked about the sonnax valve and springs, his comments were that he liked the BTS valve body, I have a sonnax valve and springs on the work bench, but will wait to get a BTS valve body. Jody said he would make the tune fit the valve body when I get it later on down the road. Right now it was decided to just use the stock stuff until I can afford the BTS valve body. He will take care of TC lock up and suggested that the trans would shift better than what I got now (xle4) and would work out until i get the BTS.
This is just what I did, hope it helps you with your decisions.

norshoredr, did Jody give you any idea as to how much torque we were adding with the 80hp econo tune? I forgot to ask. Plus, I should have had him program it WITHOUT the sonnax valve. I do think I will take it out this week unless anybody else has suggestions?

Thanks!

Here's the deal on the Sonnax valve. It comes in differing diameters, .331, .372, .427 and some other vendors offer them up to .500. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

When I was messing around with an older E4OD, Brian @ BTS said to use the .372

We didnt talk about torque... should have of course. I felt it was better to just stay stock until I could get the BTS Valve body, and then let Jody adjust the tuned pcm to compliment the BTS valve body. Thats just what I'm doing, I just figured that if Jody recommends the BTS Valve body and it works good with his PCM's im for that. Of course if I knew more about all this I could make lots better decisions, but since I'm less than novice, I gotta take advice on this stuff.

I also talked to Jody and he also likes the Greg Evans FTVB which I have. He said the econo tune would work perfect with the FTVB and that I would be very happy.I know the tune itself with affect your shifting. I would pull it out, then get the new PCM in and see how you like it. If you still want firmer shifts you can choose either The Sonnax, BTS OR FTVB.
Good Luck

You say that you are ordering Jodys tunes, so who's are you running now? I have a TS PMTfuel7 burn that does the romp, romp when shifting into OD ever so slightly, if you let of the throttle a whisker, it doesn't do it. So I believe that the romp you are experiencing is in the programming not the valve body, no doubt that Jody will fix it.

Sorry for the late reply. I understand that there are 3 different valve sizes. Not sure which one I got, but just ordered the standard kit so not sure which one I got. If anybody knows, I would appreciate the info.

I am not currently using any chips or programs. Just stock. I have the same situation. If I lay off the throttle just a smidge, it shifts great. If there is any extra pressure...romp romp! I will hope that the tune from Jody will fix that. Sure hope it does. I am trying to pay attention to all the members who use the sonnax/tricum mod and there are a ton! So must be a good mod. But I will let people know if the flash fixes the problem.

Thanks to all the people giving input!

Also, can you add HP and not torque? Just thought I would get a decent torque increase too?

Thanks again!

onetoughdiesel, I finally decided to install the sonnax mod, t/c lock w/led and ordered today. At same time I will install cooler, amsoil, magnafine and temp guage. Ordered all today in hopes of getting it done before next week when I will tow trailer a good distance. I am hoping to correct a problem I recently posted of a 'double shift' into 3rd. Reading your post is making me nervous now. Let me know how things turn out for you. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Bocat, I will let you know as soon as I know something. It will be friday though. That is when I get the computer flash and the gauges. The sonnax/tricum mod is good...well great when i first installed it. Firm and strong shifts. I pulled my boat to Missouri and I noticed it shift funny into OD. Maybe I fried something in the tranny. my boat isn't big at all so I doubt that. But that was only after a week of having it installed. 75% of the time it is no problem.

Stay posted though. If this fixes the shift problem, I would recommend installing both the springs and valve and then have jody flash your computer for 75 bucks. If it doesn't help mine, then I would install the springs only. I know people have done this with good success. But then again, MANY people have the whole kit and absolutely no problems. I just think I may have an issue with my trans?

Sorry for being windy, but just my thoughts.
