I was reading through my haynes manual and kept talking about bad diesel and how additives should be used sometimes. Also in cold weather the fuel begins to freeze or thicken. Don't they put additives in the fuel already for winter time? Do you guys have to run a fuel additive every so often or is the fuel pretty good. This is my first diesel so after reading the manual it seems like it is easy to get bad gas. Thanks.

On edit: Replced "gas" with "diesel" as poster admitted to wrong word in his next post.

Re: Do you guys ever get bad gas or water in the gas? Gas problems?

Nope, I use diesel, not gas. Only add a conditioner that has lubricity and check the drain in the water extractor every oil change. I have never had my water in fuel light come on. I have seen water in fuel but it is usually because someone is filling their equiment with a jerry can with no cap on it. Never put in an addative that will disperse water, it can then bypass the extractor filter and get to the injectors and mess them up.

I use AMSOIL products. When I run out on the road I use Howels

That's "Howe's", and it's good stuff. The best additive, according to all I've learned here in nearly 7 years, is Stanadyne; I know my truck runs quieter and smoother (less 'top end rattle') with Stanadyne. Harder to find than Howe's, though. Just my $.02

howes, stanadyne, lucas and fords "lubricity" fuel conditioner/additives. I have used all of them with the same results, so I would bet they are all three about the same formula just different brand names. concerning these four brands, I think it is more important that you use one, rather than what brand you use. in our heavy equipment and trucks we use automatic transmission fluid, up to 4 qts per 100 gallons of fuel. I am not sure how much lubrication it offers, but when we take an engine down they are very clean inside and we dont have injector or pump problems.

Yes the oil companies already put an additive package in ALL diesel fuel. In winter they start winter mix long before it is needed in most parts of the country.
In over 200,000 miles of the 365,000 miles on my truck, it has NEVER had any additives added. I have seen my water in fuel light Oise & just drained it at the filter... problem solved. Ford does NOT recommend adding anything to the fuel for normal service.
Most of these additives were developed back with the first generation diesels. The engines and the fuel are better now & they are no longer needed.

i never have used an additive , in the fuel , not saying it wouldn't help , but I just never use it. I read somewhere the the SOY DIESEL, lubs better (could be un true), I use that alot because there is a station near my house. mostly though I just like to stick to stations that go thru alot of diesel fuel.
