I met a guy today who told me that I could improve my MPG and get better fuel pressure if I stuck a BB or something of the sort somewhere in the fuel regulator and said he found the trick on this site, sound familiar??

Remove the 19mm threaded plug from the fuel regulator - the fuel regulator is attached to the drivers side of the fuel filter housing. (It's a good idea to put a rag under the regulator to hopefully catch anything that may drop) There is a spring that centers on the nipple of the plug. Carefully remove the spring. Put a dab of grease (I have used dielectric grease) on the end of the spring, and use the grease to hold a bb in place while you reinsert the spring, bb first. Reinstall the plug and remove the rag.

Some have used a small bolt. or screw - one which has a shaft small enough to fit within the spring. The bolt, or screw can then be ground down (if necessary) to obtain a required pressure level.

Pressure can be checked at the schrader valve located as part of the regulator assembly.

I have used the bb method with good results.

You can use the BB or you can use a 4-40 socket-head cap screw (as was mentioned). I prefer this method as the head can be ground down if the pressure is a little high (60-75 psi at idle is a good number) and sometimes the BB can get stuck inside the valve spool piece, should you ever want to remove it. Check the pressure with a liquid filled 0-100 pressure gauge at the schraeder valve (it'll be very jumpy due to the nature of the fuel pump). Cheers!

The great knowledge that you have came across is not BB trick. It is however good. But the site & the members (or former ones) is the best thing to learn about. Do searches on the old posts, there's a ton of wealthty info. Happy reading.

I made a very handy pressure gauge set up for about 20$ works great
I just took out the shrader valve and replaced with an elbow and quick connect and put the mating quick connect on a grease gun hose with the gauge, i got the idea from here

here it is:

Here is a photograph and some text relating to the various shim options. I question whether it improves mileage.

Two cautionary notes: (1) If your fuel pump is aged and headed south anyway, the increased pressure will hurry that along.

(2) If you mess with the Schrader valve or replace it with fittings for a gauge, be very light on the touch, especially with tapered (NPT) fittings. That housing will crack easily and you'll hate yourself in the morning.

Anybody have the part numbers for the spring itself? if the california kit has it in it, that would do it also...

Thanks

If you guys need Orings while you're in there, PM me, I have some in my ebay store and trying to scrounge up more.
Thinking about including a "BB" in the kit too....
are the bolts a better idea?

I used a ball from a holley carb kit I had around, it was a bit large, it's a clearance fit inside that triangle shaped piston.... there won't be any getting that out of there if my pressure is too high! That's what I get for being in a hurry sometimes! Stupid thing is, I got derailed on the project and it's not running yet!

I think the 4-40 socket-head cap screw is the way to go. Sometimes the BB can get jammed in the valve piece, which makes life difficult should you want to remove it. You can also "fine tune" by grinding down the head of the screw. Cheers!

It's a small screw available at almost any decent hardware store for maybe $1 at the most (4-40 refers to the size). Note that the head is of the allen-head type (socket head) which is smaller in diameter than a regular slotted or Phillips type (so it will fit down in the FPR valve piece). Cheers!
