You don't need to..I bought the 4inch straight pipe system from diamond eye and the 4 inch downpipe fits just fine...u just have to get someone ontop of the motor while you fish it up in from below..it's a little tight gotta turn n twist it around but once it's fully up in there it has plenty of clearance

If parry99f250 put a 4" down pipe into a OBS truck without modding the daylights our of the firewall he is a magician since you usually need to cut and bend a pinch weld just to get a 3" in.

You can do it with just a crow bar but you will need to cut the pinch weld in 3 or 4 places and then bend it to where the down pipe will clear. If you install the top piece and then take a look where the bottom piece fits you will see what you need to do. Some trucks have the engine and tranny moved further forward and the pipe will usually fit with out modding the fire wall but that is a rarity.
It also helps if you pick up some wood shims to use to keep the new down pipe off of the fire wall as you tighten up the bolts. If you do not get enough clearance you will have some bad vibrations and one heck of a noise.

How is that done? Different engine/tranny mounts? Can it be done in preparation for a downpipe install?

My apologies I must have missed what year your truck was..I have a early model 99...
You missed by a whole forum. This is an OBS forum; without reading / knowing the OP's exact year, it's presumed it's an OBS. Here you got us all excited that someone actually got a 4"-er in an OBS, only to find out.....

The engine and tranny mounts are not different, but it just depends on the individual truck on how they sit. Some guys loosen everything up and try and move them forward to gain a bit of clearance. Cheers!

Like Patrick said. What you need to do is loosen all the motor, and tranny mounts and then take a bar and pry the motor forward towards the radiator. We are only talking about fractions of an inch possibly not more than a quarter of a inch, but it does help.

On my wifes 95 psd , I didnt cut anthing on the firewall, I used a pry bar and a section of 2x4 to place against the motor and I used the pry to bend the fire wall back in places I needed for the pipe to fit.

My bad man..I'm on my cellphone app so it doesn't categorize the forums, just lists each post as they're posted

Yes, it is an OBS. Any of the 3" downpipes will work (you'll still have to bend up the firewall lip). It just depends on what you want for the connection on the rear end of the pipe. If you're all stock and want it to bolt up to the CAT, there are ones out there that do that. There are also ones that have a 3.5" slip fit where you cut the flange off the CAT where it bells up to 3.5" and clamp it. If you plan to go with a 4" or larger exhaust, there are ones that go from 3" at the turbo to 4" at the other end.

William,
Yes, you have the "old" body style. In 1997 Ford made F150's with the newer body and kept F250's, 350's, etc with the "OBS" If I recall, Ford really never really made a 1998 F250, they "played" with the model years and introduced the 1999 REALLY early.
