Its impossible to remove in one piece, the best way to remove it is using a sawzall with a fine tooth bi-metal blade and cut it into three pieces.

Yeah, my down pipe finally fell out when i started hoisting my engine up and forward...It was very frustrating with a loose downpipe swinging in your face trying to undo motor mount bolts !! BTW be careful of the steel fuel lines that run into the back of your heads...I buggered it up trying to remove the downpipe before removing the engine. Lets just say, unless you plan on removing your engine for other work, you're going to be cutting the downpipe as mentioned in the previous posts.

Any particular reason you would want to save the factory-issued "strangle pipe"?
