Ok - in your best Professor Farnsworth impersonation (Futurama, in case you had to ask) -

Good News, Everyone -

Jody has been working with us to help with the problem of smoking and W85.

Through the shared experiences of many people on the alternative fuels forum and Jody's magic - the problem is largely solved.

My own experiences with W85 were smoke free performance for the first day or two, then progressively worse smoking to the point I was waiting for the EPA to send agents to my house. I added RUG a gallon at a time with no help. I filled it up with D2 and the smoke continued. I was convinced I had killed my truck.

For a little personal anger management, I did a full throttle acceleration as therapy. The truck quit smoking. Over the next few days of running W85 - the smoke was back. One more WOT run - cleared again. My theory was that the W85 was burning slower and coating the inside of my exhaust manifolds and turbo. Running up the temperature burned off the residue and I was smoke free until the residue built up.

Armed with this, I spoke with a few W85 founding fathers. Chris (rsr911) mentioned he advanced his timing on his IDI which helped with the smoking. We consulted with Jody and he built us several experimental tunes to do this to our PSDs.

After a month of testing - here's where we are at. My trucks smoking is down about 95%. I smoke a lot less than the Dodge boys. I can idle the truck at the bank drive through without worrying about killing the other customers. I had a motorcycle follow me for 40 miles last Sunday. I consider this a huge success.

In full disclosure - my truck will begin to smoke minimally after a week or so on W85. NOTHING like before, but still a slight haze. One heavy acceleration and it clears up. The exhaust still isn't as pleasant smelling as someone running used french fry oil, but that's a small price to pay considering the fuel savings.

Jody announced today the W85 tunes are ready to be released. I have been running the W85-60 econo. I have pulled with the W85-80 tow with minimally increased smoking on heavy throttle. I personally am going to use the W85-60 tow just for the decreased fueling strategy. My EGTs are running about 50 degrees below D2.

I am very excited about this. I was just about ready to throw in the towel with W85 due to the smell and smoke. Now I'm in it for good.

Edit: until Jody gets the website updated, call the office or e-mail for the tunes. I'm sure he'll get the website changed after the first few hundred calls.

I'm going to consult with my chip tuner and see if he can do anything for me. I would like to get rid of the smoke as mine smokes pretty good once I have a tank or two through it. Usually it results in me running low and putting a couple gallons of D2 in to clear it up.

Thanks RT, RSR911 and Jody at DP-Tuner and others. My DP F5 chip should be here by end of the day (unless UPS screws it up) with a few of the W85 tunes added to it.

My smoking experiences were exactly like yours RT. Thanks for posting your problems and solutions, it was a huge help.

I follow this subject twice a day.

Would you folks post what kind of waste oil (as best as you can guess) you have problems with the smoking. I started out early this spring with farm machinery oil and had smoking problems.

I then switched/found sources for wmo from auto engines and the smoking problem was almost non esistent.

Lately I been getting WMO that has some ATF in it and the ole 99 psd is really runnign sweet on W85.

sure if i get groceries for a week or so and then trounce on it, the grey haze darkens the horizon, but that is not the way this old man normally drives.

also i inched up to W 83 on the WMO that I know does not have any atf in it, so I am curious about the difference in the 7.3"s and how they like to sip on the WMO.

My supplier is a diesel shop, so I suspect most of mine is 15W40 - and coal black...

I get my atf from a torque converter manufacturing co.
All the atf is from cores they receive and drain. Not the cleanest source of atf probably. The normal person does not generally replace their torque converter unless the tranny was rebuilt, and that doesn't happen until there is a major malfunction!

I do not use a 7.3, but I have found w-80 works best in my 6.2L

automotive oil runs great for me and never smokes except at start up which it does on diesel as well. I get a good bit of oil from a trucking company and it will smoke heavy if I don't add additional RUG. I run about 18% with the truck oil.

Update - I've got over two months on this tune and traveled about 2500 miles. Smoking is observed only with hard acceleration. EGT's are about 50° below my diesel temps. My truck was due for its inspection this month - passed with flying colors running W85. I'm still thoroughly impressed with Jody's work.

When you say W-80 are you talking about vegi oil or petroleum oil?
Most of the waste oils I have burned were vegetable oils; however, I have experimented with WMO and found the same blend relationship worked for me, but as RSR911 says, it depends upon the weight of the oil. A few months ago I blended just one gallon of heavy gear oil into my blend and found I had to increase the gasoline content to 50%

What does this DP-Tuner tune do exactly. What are the mechanics of it?
Of course, Jody's not going to reveal all his secrets, or the other tuners would just copy and paste his work. He made adjustments in timing, injector pressure, and other black box magic to optimize the engine to our fuel. It worked.

Is it still safe to run diesel on this tune? I'm not worried about myself forgetting to switch, but others who may drive my truck might and I'd hate to have it wreck something.

I checked with DPS Performance and he said he has a tune for WMO too. I'm going to be going next week to have him install it on my chip. Since I have a 6 position I will be able to run WMO blends and then switch it if I need to run regular diesel.

I wouldn't think so - I doubt it would do any immediate damage, but I wouldn't want to run it for any long distances on the wrong tune. Why are you letting other people play with your DP-Tuner? Tell everyone up front if they use your truck - don't mess with the radio, the mirrors, the seat position, or your damn tuner....
