I went to drain the HFCM yesterday evening, and the plug finally stripped the housing out. It is holding, but barely. I have tried to search for other posts, but I keep getting a message that says I can't perform another search at this time. I have some questions regarding getting this fixed:

1) I am assuming that this part of the fuel system is NOT covered by the 5Y/100K warranty that the engine has, so I would like to try changing it out myself. My first question is about the recall specifically for the HFCM. It was about the WIF light staying on after draining the HFCM. Can someone re-iterate what it covers?

2) I have pulled the plug off before and noticed some "crud" at the end of the threads. I have seen the picture of one that had the algae growing in it. If I have the algae, can it be cleaned, or will I have to change the hole thing out?

3) Are there any special tools needed to disconnect the lines coming in and going out of the unit itself.

4) There is a wesite that lists all of the recalls and flashes for these engines. Does anyone know the address to this site?

5) Has anyone had to do this to there truck? If so, do you have any tips/tricks to make the job easier?

I appreciate any information anyone has to contribute.

Thanks,

Joey -- What is it that is stripped -- the 6mm allen hole in the plug or the opening in the manifold that the plug screws into? If it's the 6mm allen hole, try an easy out to remove the plug.

Black05,

The opening in the manifold is stripped. One day when I removed it to drain some water, I experienced some resistance while unscrewing it. It puzzled me b/c I didn't expect for it to "bind". Upon pulling the plug out, I noticed some rusty-looking "crud" on the end of the threads. Ever since then, it always screwed and unscrewed like it might have been cross-threaded. The threads on the brass plug look okay, but they appear to have some Aluminum deposits on them. It has enough "bite" to keep the plug from unscrewing, and it also isn't leaking when under pressure, so I'm crossing my fingers and checking it periodically. I've got it scheduled to go in on Friday (5/19/06). When I take it in, I'm going to order the International plug (the one with the knurled end).

All,

I spoke to the local service dude and he told me that they'd end up replacing the whole manifold. I inquired about just replacing the cover and he said that all of the ones they end up replacing have that waxy looking "crud" in there, so they just replace the whole manifold. He said I'd only have to pay the $100 deductible for this job, which would cost about $300 if paid for out-of-pocket. I'm also going to get the 05E15 recall done, so I'm going to do some research on that.

On a side note, does anyone have an comments about the 05E15 recall?

Thanks,

Joey -- Thanks for the clarification. Your new HFCM may no longer have the heater element (IIRC, they have done away with it), but this should not pose a problem with our weather.

As for the 05E15 recall, the diesel mechanic at the dealership I use said that it should have no running effects; but that if my truck was running fine, he would recommend not doing it. The reports on this recall on TDS have been mixed, with most being positive. I am holding on to my notice until the truck needs something else done under warranty (then I can use it to get the free rental car allowed with the 05E15 recall).
