Well, yeah, it would have to be to accommodate the thickness of the gasket. Remember that the upper pan is not only a structural part of the engine block it also completes the mounting for the transmission. Even though it is probably just machined 1mm-2mm more, somewhere, we can't be totally sure, putting one on an earlier build engine might result in bolt holes and machined surfaces not aligning. Though I do wonder if it can be done and it would be a nice little upgrade. Someone would have to try and let us know.

My dealer also wanted $4500 to replace it on my 2015. I had a local diesel shop do it for $3000. He said they've done a bunch of them. They said high cost because you have to pull the transmission back to get to two of the oil pan bolts.

Actually, the transmission does NOT have to be pulled... but that is a different discussion for another venue. Also, the transmission is NOT preventing access to ANY upper oil pan bolts. Your local diesel shop LIED to you, or they are stupid. Probably both.

Is there a different oil pan gasket it could have been then? Lower? All I know is my truck was dripping black oil all over my new brick paver driveway and both the dealer and diesel shop told me the transmission had to be pulled back to replace the gasket so I didn't question it. Must be a common scam if it isn't true.

They pulled the transmission on my 15 when they did mine. I think things change over time and Technicians figure out how to do this a better way than the book says. I had a leak twice with my truck. There are 3 or 4 bolts that hold a plate to the back of the motor. it was leaking out of those bolts. Thankfully the dealer fixed it for FREE. I have been buying them doughnuts ever since.

The WSM procedure has you remove the transmission so removing it is not a scam. I am just saying it can be done otherwise if you are a skilled technician that puts a little thought into things and discover other/better/faster ways to do something.
