We are soon to purchase 2008 F-450 King Ranch & wondering if we should opt for the dual 320 amp Alternator up grade or go with the single 200 amp alt! "Wondering" if one of the two alternators go down will the other one still charge, are they independantly wired?

Any help & info on this would be great.

Thanks.....Chris

Unless you are going to opt for an engine driven air compressor, I'd go for the duals. Unless a bearing goes completely south, the second alternator will keep you going if one fails.

I have the duals but I wouldn't want to change one on the side of the road! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I thought about it but for my needs I did not think they are needed. I do have the high amp option, 200 amps I think, due to ordering the supplemental heater. If you are buying a work truck that will have lots of power drains or the truck is going to be an ambulance or utility truck I can see it, but for personal use, I don't see the need. My 450 will be used for towing a very large fifth wheel, so the extra juice of the 200 amp model will be nice for battery topoff and brake actuation. Rather not have the added drag on the engine of a second alternator also. You are going to love the 450, we love ours.

Capt, does the supplemental heater work at all times when the engine is "cold" (even in warmer weather like now?) Do you notice instant heat even in summer weather like this? I wondered if it worked from engine coolant temp data versus outdoor temp or a combo of both?

I do not know, I have never turned the heater on. Lot's of things left to discover. So many toys on Lariet's, so little time(dang work /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif keeps getting in the way).

I got the snow plow prep option and you have to get the dual alts. With the snow plow prep, you get a lot for little money.

I got the snow plow prep and I just have the "BIG" single alternator on mine. Seems to handle everything I need ok.

If you did some research into the amp draw of just the stock equipment, I think you'll find that the 200 amp alternator is already near it's capacity. I put the dual alternators on mine because I use it to plow snow, but I would put them on regardless. (mine's an 07 tho')

There are also some threads about the fielding voltage from the computer being inadequate. This is kinda tough to change without knowing what you're doing, but suffice to say that either of the Ford alternator configurations are less than ideal, even for a lightly loaded electrical system.

My past two trucks had the duals. Seemed like a cheap investment for the piece of mind, boost to charge the camper batteries and allows to run fridge in the 12v mode without creating a hardship on the alternator.
