Dumb question..maybe. Can you exceed EGT's towing stock?

While discussing pro's and con's of mods with a friend the subject of EGT's came up. When towing, I am sure that you can exceed your threshold of EGT's easily with a stock set up. Buddy wasn't so sure, stating why don't diesels come stock with a pyro then? Does the truck recognize temps and adjust? Suppose you wouldn't know until it was too late.
I think that within a few years one of the big three will come out with a pyrometer gauge. What do you guys think?

Well, not "easily", but some stock PCM codes will get over 1,250º under extreme conditions of towing a heavy trailer up a steep mountain pass at wide open go pedal. So if you don't have a pre-turbo pyrometer, then limit speed when towing up a mountain to about 55 MPH, or about eight-tenths of wide open.

With my excellent intake and exhaust, and the Edge Evo programmer set on "Tow", I can maintain about 60 MPH up the hill when grossing 17,500 pounds without too-high EGT. When grossing 16,000 pounds, I leave the cruise control on 62 and hang on while my BTS tranny downshifts and my hot-rod towing machine takes the hill. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/warmsmile.gif
