I have a 95, 7.3 turbo, 145,000 miles all stock. I have learned belatedly, about the transmission challenges from this year vehicle. I have had the transmission rebuilt by incompetent shops twice. This time I am thinking about buying a Ford remanufactured unit, Ford torque converter and new transmission cooler. This truck is used in my business to pull 8-15,000# trailers. I am anxious to hear from the voices of experience on this forum. I live in the Dallas, Texas area.

Thanks!

I'm currently having a ton of other problems with my truck. I can, however, tell you my experiences with my trans...

I plow a lot with my truck and that's basically putting the trans through hell and back several times every winter. My trans first went out at about 150,000 miles. I had a local shop rebuild it. I guess I got lucky because this trans guy did a great job and it still runs great to this day. He replaced all the aluminum gears with steel gears. He installed a Ford heavy duty torque converter. He also installed a heavy duty pump. I had no problems for 2 years. It cost me about 2,800 for the rebuild. I did have a problem 2 years later with the pump but it was my fault. I didn't allow the pump to break in properly before I went plowing with it.

My point... Find a good shop or buy a Sun Coast trans. Ford reman's are probably fine but you'll still get aluminum gears and standard torque converter and pump.

KinkadeIN.....shouldn't you either be plowing or sleeping? I just drove from Chicago to Merrillville and it sucked!!! Once I got onto 80 in IN, it seemed like the plow trucks were parked and they ran out of salt......the roads are bad!

For a really dependable get a BTS or racerx. BTS is in Arkansas and racerx in Carolina most guys on these forums swear by these two.

I had a Ford E4OD in my '94 gasser a few years back, don't go down that road. If your doing that kind of pulling and have already spent on tranny rebuilds twice, look up Brian's Truck Shop (BTS) and he will advise you on what is best for you.

Welcome to the Diesel Stop doublejack.

This is not coming from experience - It is coming from months of reading way to many threads relating to what you're asking.

The general consensus really is to stay away from the Ford Rebuilt Tranny, if you do much towing or plowing. BTS, RacerX, John Wood, and Suncoast are the most popular go to guys for a built tranny. If I ever have the need for a new tranny, it'll be a BTS.

You don't have to take the few suggetions you've been given as gospel. Search the forum for E40D and you'll have more than you care to read. You'll see why the suggestions made, have been made.

Its all about the aluminum gears... Plus stock programing sucks. I had a nice aftermarket HD t/c and when my aluminum gears went they contaminated my nice t/c. Get a HD aftermarket set-up built and warrantied for what you intend to do with the truck now and later down the road... Even after paying 2700 for my rebuild( i had to cause I was TDY to arizona for school) I plan on getting one from BTS or ATS( atleast a stage 4) because they warranty their tranny's for life. My new one only has a 18000 mile warranty. ATS is 300,000 and I hear BTS is even better. Says alot right there...

E4OD rebuild info 95 F250

I am looking for info regarding the direction of rotation for this tranny before installing back in the truck. Can I verify that the one way's are in corectly buy turning the tail shaft by hand? I am sure that the intermediate one way is in correct but I want to make sure first. This tranny had the forward planet fail however all the clutch plates were fine.

i used either jaspers or ford reman units. jaspers has a roller bearing instead of ford with a copper bushing, along with other upgrades to the e4od. jaspers had a warehouse off ave k off 360. it's been awhile since i have purchased a tranny.
