I'm about to do a fluid and filter change on my E4OD, and I remember reading somewhere the filters like to fall off and that Ford came up with two solutions to that - one is a magnet that goes between the filter and the VB, and the other is a steel clip that is held in place by one of the VB bolts. Does anyone know the part # for the clip? Also, I just read a few threads that say the filter change ain't required, or even suggested by Ford - is that correct, and if so what would be the logic behind it? Finally, part # for the filter, I'd assume it can be obtained through a Ford dealership?

The only thing I knew about filter retention was to ensure the old sealing ring on the filter pipe must be removed from the inlet. It can on occasion slip off the filter pipe and if it remains in the inlet it will hold the new filter from seating correctly. This will then cause the new filter to drop out slightly and not suck the fluid. New filters and gaskets can be purchased at many AP stores...... some shops do reuse the original gasket just clean it up and torque the pan bolts to.........10-12 FTLBS

While you're at it you may want to switch to a newer trans pan that has a drain plug in it. Ford dealer, about $40. App: 2000 F-250, 5.4L 4R100 trans 4x4. Directly interchanges with a E4OD 4x4 pan, use on a 2wd truck requires a 4x4 filter which has a deeper pickup.

It is true. Ford does not have a change of filter listed for the trans.

The logic behind it is that there isn't enough junk in the trans to clog the filter unless the trans has already failed. If it makes you feel better, change the filter.

Pete, I don't really care for the drain plug, I'm on a fairly limited budget so while tis nice to have one I can live with making a bit of a mess. Thanks for the TSB too.

Mark, so basically if my trans still shifts good I don't need a new filter, and if I do need a new filter I may as well start looking for a new trans? Good to know, gotta have a look at the magnet first though.

Also, turns out the clip is actually an aftermarket part, it's made by Superior and runs for like $6 or so.
