Eleminate load sensing brake valve? Change proportioning valve?

On my 86 F250, the brake performance has been poor to say the least. After replacing the rear brakes, perfomance was still poor, and it seemed the rear brakes weren't doing much work. Using an 87 rear brake hose and a 1/4 to 3/16 adaptor, I elemenated the height sensing valve on the rear brakes since a new one wasn't available. Big suprise! I get rear wheel lockup in a panic stop now. I think the original proportioning/ residual pressure valve may be poor anyway, not to mention it was calibrated to use the height sensing valve.

The options I've come up with are find a source for a new OEM valve, and then add an adjustable proportioning valve, or find a proportioning valve calibrated to work without the height sensing valve. Anyone have any experience with this?
