I watched a strange site today in front of my work. The San Diego Police set up a mobile emissions test on a fairly busy road. They were stopping everyone and inspecting random cars/trucks and putting them on a smog test machine. A couple of people got cited for not having approved CARB (California Air Resource Board) emissions performance modifications like exhausts or intakes. Anyone know if our Diesels are exempt from emissions tests? I do know removing the kitty is a problem but not sure about anything else.

I've heard talk or roving smog checks here is California, mostly targeted at the Central Valley. CARB has also considered setting up sniffers and stop lights and freeway on ramps with metering lights. So now the smog Nazis are out and about.

I don't know if our trucks will be except from any probes up the tail pipe. But my guess would be that they are fair game when it comes to a visual inspection. Is that big, huge cat still connected, maybe check the EGR valve for operation?

All to make the world a better place and cut down on the 0.01% of the world's "green house gases" California produces. Maybe with a lot of taxes dollars, high(er) gas prices and smog Nazis we can get that number down to 0.009% over the next 100 years. Won't that be wonderful.......

I just moved to Oceanside and the thought of these mobile smog tests scare me as I'm running a tuner. Oh wait, I'm in the military and I still have Nevada plates so if they try to give me a ticket I'll tell their Nazi @$$e$ where to put it! California is going to hell in a hand basket and the liberals are taking it there!!

I have seen these smog check points in Norco, Ca. and Pomona, Ca. They have been using them here for the last 3 or 4 years that I am aware of.

Another reason why I left the "Peoples Republic of California" and moved to Texas! San Diego is so far in the red that they will do anything to bring in revenue. Are they checking cars with Mexican plates too?

Move to Louisiana, because right now they are following you to TX /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love CA and the majority of people in the state are good people who are legislated by the jackasses in the larger cities (Oregon has to deal with this as well). But what I've noticed is this: Californians are similar to the aliens in Independence Day. They stripped their state of freedom and now move to other states, cirrupt the government, drain the freedom and liberties from there and move to another location. I'm from Colorado originally and used to have a bumper sticker that said "Don't Californicate Colorado."

Colorado is my home, always will be, but the over-regulation in the state has turned a lot of people sour to anything related to Cali.

Diesels are exempt from emissions testing. I think they're mostly going after the "ricky racers".. the guys with Honda Civics who jam Acura engines all modded out in there.... big No-Nos as far as CARB is concerned.

We have several locations in Houston where the smog sniffers are on the entrance ramps to the freeway, they choose that location because it is were you will be flooring it.

I am glad I lived way back when I stuffed a 428 where a 302 had been. Times change and more people watch. Wonder what comes out of the tailpipe of an ACURA motor as opposed to what comes out of a HONDA motor ?

Arizona used to use those sniffers on the on ramps to the freeway. It was a Fed program. Results were marginal - they nolonger do it. But Maricopa county here in AZ does EPA test Diesels. They visually check for required equipment and plug in the OBDII reader. Thats it.
