Recently I read in this column about a device that will allow you to idle your engine up while sitting still. Due to a handicap in my family, I need to be able to operate the A/C for extended periods while parked. Will raising the idle allow the A/C to cool properly? Is this bad for the engine? Will there be proper engine cooling? Any advice?

First let me say Welcome to the Site! You can find out just about anything you'd ever want to know about Ford diesel here.

Your looking for an auxiliary idle controller. Yes, it will increase the idle to help the a/c work better by increasing the air flow across the condenser. Will it hurt the engine? On the contrary, Ford recommends that you never idle the engine at normal idle speed for more than 10 minutes. Will there be proper engine cooling? Yup.

You don't say what year model truck you have, so I'll assume a 99 up. Go to the 99 up engine and drivetrain forum and do a search on auxiliary idle controller, or AIC. There has been a lot of discussion on this in the past.

Oops, I almost forgot the module you are asking about is also commonly known as a APCM, auxiliary power control module.

You might be talking about the post I made about a new one I have. It will work on any year powerstroke. It's very hot here now and I have been using it alot and I love getting into the truck and it's like ice. A/C works much better idled up.

Sorry, I forgot about your new idle controller. I really like the fact that it is less than half the price of Ford's. I'll probably be getting one from you before too long.

Hi, BrettJ, and Welcome! to Ford-Diesel.com.

This website has several different forums, and various subjects are "on topic" in various forums. This particular forum is reserved for discussions about the operation of www.Ford-Diesel.com. Several other forums are reserved for discussions about '99-up PowerStroke Diesel (PSD) trucks, and some are reserved for discussions about other years of Ford diesel trucks. We even have one forum devoted to gas engine Fords, and one devoted to towing and hauling.

I suspect your question would best fit in the forum that Mike suggested - '99-up SuperDuties [diesel] Engine and Drivetrain. Look for additional responses in that forum.

To get to that forum, scroll up to the top of this screen - above your first message - and click on the big word "Forums". then scroll down the list to Engine and Drivetrain.
