Early ’99 7.3 w/240K miles.

I replaced the turbo because I was getting a low boost code and hearing noise in the engine. Upon inspection of the turbo the shaft was loose and bushing appeared to be shot. Anyways, I just completed the turbo upgrade and installation of T500 HPOP. The truck started right away, but the noise is still there. I disconnected the belt and the noise persists, so it’s not a belt driven item. Any ideas as to where I should start tracking the noise down? It only makes the noise at idle, but is otherwise running smooth and quiet at higher RPM’s without any smoke. Hard to explain the noise….but it is consistently intermittent :dunno:. Not as loud or consistent as a rod knock, but not as soft as a lifter noise.

Obviously, it is hard to track down engine noise on a diesel.....Where do I start hunting this problem down?!?!?

With 240k miles, it could easily be injector problems, especially if they're the originals. You can remove the valve covers and run the truck, observing the oil discharge from the individual injector spouts.

Disconnecting each injector can also help pinpoint a bad injector, although be darn careful about messing with injector wires. They carry in excess of 100V, which can knock you on your can. The job is best done with an injector cutout box (goes between the body and engine harnesses and has switches for each injector).

Engine sounds good above 1100-1200 RPM's. The noise is just @ idle and high-idle.

Here are some video clips where you can hear the noise:

Finally had a chance to look into it further today....I was advised to look into a known problem with the torque converter, and that's exactly where the noise is coming from. There was a TSB issued on this matter, but I'm fairly certain I'm outside of the trans warranty on the reman and will be replacing the TC on my own dime.

Next questions are:

1) Should I expect to have metal in my trans from the impact between the converter piston and cover spline teeth?
2) Am i best served replacing the TC with a stock unit, or is there an aftermarket TC that may offer some sort of performance option?

I cannot give you an answer, but I would suggest a little more info. Is it the original trans? What are your plans for it, eg; just a daily driver, I want to pull stumps, I want to climb Mt Everest......, it would help the guru's give you a better answer. Anytime you have wear damage occurring in the trans, secondary damage is imminent. Simply opening it up to repair the cause can sometimes make the secondary damage worse, and then you end up not only replacing the whole trans, but also the "new" parts as well.

Factory reman approx 5 years old and not sure of miles. I use the truck as a DD and to occasionally pull a 28' travel trailer and a bass boat, but don't otherwise need any earth shattering power. Nevertheless, I would like to know if there are options I should consider with regards to the TC. As for ancillary damage to the trans, I' know that it is possible, but the TSB makes no mention of looking into the trans outside of the TC, so I'm hoping it is a condition that limits any damage to the TC alone.
