Hey guys, I pulled off my intercooler pipes last week to do some cleaning and painting. Well, I noticed that they had some motor oil in them. Enough to where it would drip out of e'm. Is this caused by the turbo's oiling system leaking?? Also, how bad of a problem is this?? The truck is an early '99 with 110 miles.

Thanks, Muddin /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Common problem and a design "feature".

The crankcase ventilation system discharges oil vapor into the turbo intake, and the oil condenses out in the intercooler & pipes. If you have excessibe blowby, the problem is worse. Check the crankcase pressure to see if it's within limits. Make sure the boots are sealed well or you'll have oily gunk in the engine valley, too.

Lots of guys have rerouted the CCV to discharge under the truck or installed a CCV filter to get the oil out of the system.

Yup, common problem. Everybody that that has the crankcase vent tied into the turbo inlet will have some oil in the pipes. That's the way it comes plumbed from the factory.

I'd say you don't have anything to worry about.

By the way, that sure isn't many miles for a 99, LOL.

Some are better than others, Mine's BAD. NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT MY FOOT!! Reroute that dude before you fill up your intercooler! Lot's of talk on this 1 or 1 1/2 years ago... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/phoney.gifLARRY? Larry? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Thanks guys!!!

Yeah, yeah ( wow 110 miles )it's not that many miles for a '99. It's actually closer to 130,000 b/c the speedo was off for a while. Even 130K isnt that much though. We have an old '84 6.9 with 545,000 on her!!! Thats what Im talkin' about!!! We did re-build her at 400K b/c it started to knock a little. Thanks man!! I wish it only had 110 miles on it!!!!

Click Here to see the basic parts I used to get the mod started. You can choose whatever color you want for the intake pipe part. This is actually a pretty nice kit for the money. Some guys just plug the 3/4" inlet on the factory intake, but that part has a lot of restriction to the airflow. This kit from ebay has nice flow.

Click Here to see the CCV (crank case vent) "dog house" which you take the two bolts out and reverse. This points the 3/4" hose towards the rear of the motor.

Click Here to see how I tied it into my exhaust after the muffler using THIS.

I just finished up the connection into the exhaust on Sunday, so I don't have personal experience lasting more than a few days. However, the people I modeled this after have not had problems for over 100k miles. I did look around the valve cover today and it is completely dry as are the intercooler boots. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif

Fat Diesel,

Thanks for the tips!! I think I might buy that kit off ebay. Did you buy that kit or make your own??

That's a nice kit! If you are looking to save some money and do it yourself, here is the scoop.

1. Drop by a muffler place and pick up a small section of 4 inch exhaust. Cost: Free - couple of bucks.
2. Go the the Autoparts store or local Big Box Building supply and purchase some 3/4" heater hose.
3. Get some hose clamps and zip ties as well.
4. Bolt it on! I routed by hose along the inside of the frame rail on the drivers side. It ends by the fuel tank.

Total cost will be less than $20.

Best Regards,
Rob

Rob is right. You can do it for the $20. I got the kit off ebay. Probably the only thing the kit has (besides the nice paint) is a welded on tab that mounts the big pipe piece where the stock one mounts. It uses a couple of small bolts. I ran it out under the rear axle, fuel tank area at first as well. With the amount of oil vapor coming out I wanted to run it into the exhaust. I am glad I did that. It cleans up the appearance of the truck a bit when you don't have two seperate "exhausts" coming out of your truck. Plus, when you run it into the exhaust it certainly sends it further from YOU which is important if you ever actually breathed that vapor ! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/vomit.gif

When it was just venting out the heater hose it was very visable. Now it is almost undetectable since it gets mixed into the exhaust stream.

Mine had 8 gallons in it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif Just kidding. I have not idea how much oil is in there, but I would hope that it would slowly evaporate into the air going through and eventually go away. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif I thought about drilling a hole in the bottom and draining it, then tapping and plugging it. But, since the oil on the boots dried up after a couple of months I think it's ok. Plus with mine having the early 99 intake plenums restricting the air into the motor compared to a 99.5+ using the same intercooler, I don't think this is an issue at least for me.

Ok gotcha!!

What is the difference in the intake plenums?? Mine is an early '99 as well ( 04/98 ) production.

I saw this picture the other day and saved it. Someone upgraded the early 99 to the later 99 turbo and all the supporting parts. As you can see, the later ones (bolted up) have a much larger cross section on the inlet tube than the early style that is laying there for comparison.

WOW!!!! that is a HUGE difference!!! I suppose to do the swap you would need about $2000 to $3000 by the time you got a turbo, up pipes, intake ( Y ), plenums etc........huh.

Someone posted that if you can find someone who has upgraded to the Hypermax turbo, you can get their old parts and be mostly there. But, yeah that is a huge difference. Like running a sprint and having to breath through a straw...

Question about running it back into the exhaust system. The exhaust is pressurized. Not a lot but it is---now instead of having the fumes sucked out of the valve cover, wont the exhaust pressure push it and exhaust back into the engine? What would it hurt to just block the hole period and suck nothing out?

Hmm, Do you have any idea of the parts list needed to do the swap?? ALso how much $$$$$ we're talking about?

Thanks, Muddin

Marvin,

See another post HERE.

Bottom line is the crankcase is venting at a lot higher pressure than the exhuast is at that point. Several people have done this for lots of miles without a problem and some have actually put it into the downpipe which I would think would be pressurized even more.
