It should be to the rear of the oil cooler. You may have to clean a bit or get a flashlight at the right angle to see it.

please pardon my ignorance but, where is the oil cooler located? I think the transmission cooler is up W/ the radiator but i'm not sure about the oil cooler.

side question, i'm in the process of doing a cooling system flush ( per goochs guide) when replacing the gasket on the thermostat housing do you apply any gasket cement or the like. is it just metal to gasket?

as a mechanic i make a good accountant.:icon_wink:

thanks
The oil cooler is beneath the driver's side exhaust manifold. The oil filter hooks into it and there is a flat spot on the block where the serial number is.
thank you

The engine serial number is just behind the filter housing on the machined part of the block. You can just see mine in this picture.

S/N on mine is 1845985

The gasket can be RTV'd into place, also run a good bead around the periphery to ensure no leaks. Let it sit up and harden a bit before installing.

So, do we just take the last 7 digits off of that number, as it appears that you have done? If so, mine is 5005471, which matches up with my valve cover......at least the last three 471, the rest is worn off on the valve cover.

So, what does this engine serial number mean? Looking at the FAQ Forged Rods thread, my engine number is nowhere near the serial numbers listed in that thread.

Yes, Yours was built in Brazil. Seems like the ones that start with a 500 are the ones built in the International plant in Brazil.

So, how do we figure out if we have forged rods with those serial numbers? Not that it matters too much, I don't even have it chipped.

The only way to really know is pull the plug (mine has an internal square drive that is 5/16" shown in the above S/N Location picture) right above the pan, just below the water jacket drain plug. It is a 3/8" NPT plug so you can look into the block and see your connecting rods. You may have to turn the engine by hand to see the bottom of the rods. When you do look to see if it looks like the Forged or PMR one in this picture.
