on my 86 6.9 my temp switch is bad the one that controls the cold advance and high idle the problem is i cant find one anywhere i've been to 3 different places and they didnt even have one in there system we tried eng temp switch, coolant temp sender, and coolant temp sensor, none that look like the one by the water neck is it a dealer part?

I just replaced two temp swtiches on my 6.9. If your looking at the front of the motor, one is just to the right of center in the top of the intake manifold and the other is on the same side of the motor, between the valve cover and the exhaust manifold. I'm not sure if there is another, but those two came from Advance Auto Parts at about $25 for the pair(i think)

The switch behind the thermostat housing is the cold advance switch. All it does is advance the injection upmp and run up the rpm till the motor reaches 120 degrees. Look for it under that name or get one in a wrecking yard. You really gotta want it to get at it ...

I went to the dealer and they wanted 68.50 for it and theres no way I was paying that much for that little thing, Its called the engine tempurature timing switch i went to a junkyard and i bought 2 of them for 10.00 they must not have known what they were or how much they are also i told them it was a coolant temp sensor.
