I am trying to replace my clutch with a SMF kit from Advance Auto , its a Perfection Clutch - Clutch Set with New Flywheel . The Pilot bearing they sent is different then the one that came out. No matter where i go they keep showing the one that came with the kit , but thats not what came out of my truck. Its a 92 F250, 2 whl drive , extra cab , 5 spd . 270K miles , . The one that came out looks fine , with needle bearings and all , but would like to replace sense its ALL APART NOW. The pics show the bearings side by side , the one with a larger hole is the one that came out . Any ideas?

I would not re-use the pilot bearing. I have seen too many fail to not want to install a new one when I have the chance. Just because the parts do not look exactly the same does not mean that the new bearing is incorrect. If the inner and outer dimensions are the same install the bearing. I am sure someone who has come across this will comment with their experience.

Over my years of many different makes and many different clutches, I can tell you that I have seen lots of pilot bearings/bushings in replacement sets that don't match the original. Just like Ford doctor said, if the inner/outer diameters match, it will work.

From what I've read on pilot bearings, most are useing the Kevlar bushing when installing a new clutch.

Thanks for the comments , The two pics below i hope show a little more of what i was referring to. The OD is the same 1.37" but the ID is Different ,, .70 for the new bearing - the one with the notches , and .83 for the one that came out ,,, SSsssssooooo the new bearing ,, installed ,, I can not get the input shaft of my trans to go in ,, I have tried A-Zone , Advance Auto , Napa all show the same thing ,,, the new bearing with the notches in it . I never thought of going to Ford to ask them what they have listed , will try them Mon morning.

What you've no doubt got is a bearing for a 6.9/7.3 engine but not for your 5spd input shaft diameter. The parts houses get their basic parts info from FoMoCo and the Ford parts books are not mistake free. I've run into it more than once as a truck mechanic and also with my own Fords. I remember years ago there were 3 different driveshafts in the same year for the exact model pickup, to order the right one you had to have the production date.

Went to Ford parts Dept and they had the same bearing that came with the kit ,, the one with the notches. I called South Bend Clutch they said it was a kit , the in-put shat was sleeved and the bearing ID was bigger, sold by Ford. Went back to the parts dept and they still didnt have anything listed , they called SB clutch , got put on hold , then voice mail , when they call him back he will call me. so im waiting , but not holding my breath.

There is a guy selling repair sleeve kits on eBay.
Did you check the bearing on the pilot before installing the new bearing? If you do have a repair sleeve on the pilot, it will be a special bearing.
Looks like the new bearing you have is the correct Ford bearing, same as pretty much any for truck back to the 70's.

That would explain it, sounds like they didn't include the sleeve.
