The wife and I took the grandkids to Disneyland a couple of weeks ago and rented an '05 Excursion with the V10 (don't know if it was 2 or 3vavle engine). Anyway I was quite impressed with overall performance and mileage. We took the SE route on 395 and mostly used cruize control between 70 and 80 mph. 14.2 mpg hand calculated over entire trip. The V10 didn't have the passing power of my 6.0 but was still pretty impressive. Nice engine.

If it was a 2V the 3V must be a little more impressive but I wonder if fuel economy would be better or worse?

You can get them for as little as $80-85 a day if you call a "local edition" office. The Airport rates are ALWAYS higher. Call a local office and tell them you want to rent an explorer, I would put those out for around $50 a day and then tell them you are interested in "upgrading" to an Ex. The Rep will love it because they get credit for the upgrade amount. If they quote too high just tell them you got a better quote from Enterprise and ask them to negotiate with you since you "use hertz all the time"

I have learned always reserve the cheapest vehicle and then ask about the price of an upgrade.

When I went to Vegas I was able to rent a loaded Tahoe 4x4, leather and satelite radio, for $8 more a day then a midsize car(taurus). The normal difference was $45 a day. The key is not to take their first offer, this was the last of three offers presented to me. The first was @ $20 a day more. This was with enterprise.

The only downfall is if they do not have any large SUV's to rent at the time.
