I have a 1995 (1994.5?) Powerstroke with 196,000 miles. I have had it about 4 years and put about 60,000 miles on it. I have always changed the oil regularly along with the fuel/air filters, etc. I have never had to add even a quart of oil between oil changes. Now it is suddenly using approx 16qts per 1000 miles. No smoke, it's running good and strong just like it always has. The dealer said that the "crankcase test" showed the engine to be "very tight". The next step they said was to test the fuel injectors at a labor only cost of $1100!

Does this sound like a reasonable course of action? Is this motor worth spending up to $4000 on for fuel injectors?

I took it to an independent diesel shop for a second opinion today.

Any thoughts?

check your fuel bowl and see what color the fuel is in there...if its black then its your injector o-rings...but you said no smoke some that may rule that out...1100 dollars will get you a set of beans stage 1's or 2's with some money to spare /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Either that or his turbo bearing is leaking and he's sucking it into the motor. Pull the intake y-pipe and see if the inside of the pipe and the turbo is oily, also pull the itake tube from the filter side and check for compressor wheel endplay and condition of fins. A small amount of play is acceptable.

I believe for that price you could have stage 1 injectors installed twice.

The independent shop is now also saying that the oil consumption is due to the injectors and/or o rings. They quoted me a higher price for labor than the dealer! Is taking the injectors out really that hard of a job or could a person with a reasonable amount of mechanic ability do the job?

He also said that the fuel is contaminated with oil so the fuel system needs to be drained and cleaned. Necessary???

BTW I'm in Austin, Texas.

Injectors are fairly straight forward. The hardest part is getting the passenger side valve cover off, and then removing all the oil that flows into the cylinders before reinstalling the injectors.

Swamps has a very good injector R&R instruction here http://www.swamp-donkey.biz/injector_removal.htm

You can get stage 1 injectors for less than a Grand from Swamps and they are golden to deal with and very willing to BS trucks and share knowledge.

As far as the contamination the filter will remove whatever isn't burned through the motor after you replace the o-rings and a lot of it will be removed during the injector R&R.

if you read up on some stuff on here you can do it yourself no problem. ive never actually done it or had to do it, but i know with the help from the people on this site that i can. i dont think cleaning out the fuel system (whatever that consists of) is necessary...just drain the fuel bowl and put a new filter in you'll be fine.

If you post where you are at there maybe someone on here willing to do the job for you at a reasonable price. If you want to try it and are a decent home mechanic we can talk you through it. I just did mine and it is not that bad.

had my truck looked at last fall, cost $3000.00. new injectors(8),R&R, 1 gp. harness, check gp,repair 1 connector. only 1 injector was bad, it had an internal o-ring leaking. they sent them out to an injector shop in wisconsin somewhere to check them. dont want to go thru that again any time soon.

The indy shop quoted $1300 to R&R the injectors so I took it back to the local Ford dealer. For $1100 they are going to R&R the injectors. That includes o rings, gaskets, oil change, fuel filter, etc.

In case I need more than a couple of injectors, what are some good sources?

Wouldn't have been Diesel Injection Service in Sun Prairie, WI. would it? Boys there don't really like PSD's there because they don't have injection pumps. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif
