?? Exhaust Leak ??(fixing stock up pipes)

Okay when I got my truck a few months back (2001 F250 with 70K miles on it) under hard accleration you can hear a rasping comming from engine. I though maybe a small exhaust leak. Well I installed a 5" magnaflow Turbo back kit and the noise was still there. Seeing you really have to pay attention to hear it. I though that it could just be the diesel engine making the noise(normal noise). Well today I drove my freinds 99 F250 his truck does not make that noise?

Im thinking Turbo leaking, exhuast manifold leaking??

any info would help.

Does anyone have a picture of the back of a 7.3 engine. I belive my leak is coming from the pipe that connects the manifolds to the turbo?

chances are its the gasket at the y and the up pipe that is a common spot for the exhaust to leak. mine went bad so i got the whole new up pipes and y from itp diesel spendy but hopefully worth it ....ps put band aids on your hand before doing the job it will save you time during the job

What he said, we don't use our truck in the winter and we spent a week putting new manifolds, up pipes, and the turbonetics on. Lots of missing flesh and empty beer cans. :lol: But, it's all worth it in the end. If you decide to replace them, the IH bellowed up-pipes are the way to go for a long lasting fix.

Well it turns out the my truck is leaking at the passenger side up pipe where it goes into the Y pipe. I wish I had the money for bellowed up pipes but I dont so, New donut gasket are 14 a piece from FORD, new o rings from dieselOrings.com 9.37, and a X wheel for 65.99. Already have the bolts soaking with PB Blaster. If these new donut gasket can make 40K that will work for me, maybe then I can buy up pipe kit.

I hear ya there as far as the $$$ goes. Let us know if the donuts do the trick;

From what I"ve heard depending on how bad the leak got, it's possible that the leak could've damaged the seam on the pipe itself rendering it non-repairable.
I've reluctantly dumped the cash for the bellowed pipes. (although I know I won't regret it later) Should be here in cpl weeks!
While I'm spending money, decided an ATS housing and turbomaster WG controller would be in order to to utilize my chip more. Once I get my 6.0 intercooler swap, I'll have completed my $2,000 poor man's turbo!:) LOL

Well just wanted to post up what I am doing to the stock up pipes. When searching all I could find is people getting the bellowed up pipes(right choice but money is tight in this economy). Everything is tore down and I did get all 4 bolts out of Y pipe with breaking them or stripping them off(hardest part so far, use plenty of PB Blaster and pacience). My stock up pipes look to be in great shape to me. The new donut gasket are not a tight fit?? Is this right, I woud say there is a paper clip gap between the pipe and gasket. Has anyone ever messed with the stock up pipes, will bolting them to Y pipe make them compress that much. and when i put back on should I use any kind of sealer or just bolt back together.

Here are pics of what I have done so far.

I have heard it said to not use the Ford gaskets but instead to use exhaust gaskets for a Chevy 350 from an auto parts store. Tighter fit and longer lasting.
Best of luck.

Looks like I am a little late to this party but. Powerstrokeshop.com has an up pipe kit that includes both pipes, doughnuts and new nuts and bolts. All for about $100.

Personally I wouldn't waste my time doing any of this with out installing brand new up pipes as well. The pipes themselves are nearly always the culprit.

I would also replace the turbo O rings since you chose to remove it.

Did you have to pull the turbo to replace the donuts? Or can this be accomplished from the bottom?
If you dont pull the turbo you will have to pull the tranny. Doing this before, I would pull the turbo instead of the tranny. (more room)

YES! My luck paid off the factory donut gasket fixed my problem I know that it will leak again, but if it can just get me though the race season of towing my 34' double car trailer maybe then I'll have the cash for bellowed up pipes. I only had about 40 bucks in this fix!:thumbsup:

so did you use the actual ford part # or did you go with the 350 chevy bit?
did your up pip ends there where the donuts seal, look ok? From what I've heard the ends of those up pipes can be damaged; just curious how yours looked; About to pull my turbo this weekend and begin addressing my leaks. Driver side is leaking quite badly; not too sure bout the pass side, but will know shortly as turbo should be off tonight.

One quick question;
did ya'll pull the turbo off pedestal, or can the whole bit come out together?
I've got everything off as well as the downpipe disconnected and y pipe clamp loose.

I used the ford donut gaskets my local ford place had everything in stock. They were like 14 bucks a piece. The hardest part is getting the 4 bolts that hold the Y pipe to up pipe take your time the the Y pipe from ford is around a 100 bucks and the bolts are 7 bucks a piece. I took turbo off pedistal, and my up pipes were in good shape.

I had my uppipes replaced at ford last year, and I think they are leaking again. How would I be able to confirm my suspicions?
Check for soot around the donuts or on the pipes or the surrounding area......i.e. firewall.
