I have a 94 IDI turbo,I have a full 3" exhaust with no muffler,it sounds good until higher rpm then it starts to sound like a glass pack,I hate that sound,if I use a 4" complete from downpipe back will that go away? It seems that with a 3" DP and the rest 3" it may still be restricted, any advice?

the larger the exhaust the deeper the note will be so it may take away some of that glass pack rapity

I have 3.5" exhaust from the turbo back with no muffler, the crackling at high RPM is deep and sounds good, not too high pitched like I have heard on some other trucks.

I have a take off 2000 PSD exhaust here,it is 3.5" I may remove the muffler and try it before I buy a 4" exhaust.

I've got 4" from the downpipe back, but I've still got to replace the stock downpipe (I know...) I get the glass pack sound around 2500, which is a little better than before the 4". I would have to think that a larger downpipe would cut it down some more.

I think you are stuck with the sound...it wouldnt matter if you had a 10" stove pipe off of a Peterbilt...you could kill it off by adding a performance muffler. I think that the ~5.5' of straight section is what causes it...it builds a harmonic vibration in the exhaust frequency itself, and leaves the pipe as a chopped up reverberation....If you put a straight through type hypermax muffler(the kind that looks like it has chain link fence inside) in the middle of that long straight section, I think that it would disrupt that exhaust reverberation enough to smooth the sound out...Personally, I dont mind the cackle...I still get cackle with my exhaust system listed in my signature.

After I straight piped my all stock exhaust, I wasn't that thrilled with the snappy cackle I got just above 2000 rpm, so I cut the tip at an angle towards the rear of the truck. Sort of a rounded 45 degree angle. Believe it or not it did make a bit of a difference. The snappy cackle was now not as sharp as it had been and it started at a higher rpm.
