This mornign went to start my truck. turned key waited for wait to start light to go off, cranked motor nothing. Shut key off, waited for wait to start light to go off again, nothing. Finally after about 10 cycles she started, fired right up, not missing a beat, smoked for about 1 second. Happened a couple of weeks ago, took only a couple of key cycles to start and ran fine. Could this be glowplugs on their way out, the truck has about 130,000 miles. I was warm this morning about 45 deg. Does this sound like i need new glowplugs or does anybody have any other ideas? thanks

How old are your batteries? These beasts need a LOT of juice to fire.

When first bought mine, the next day it would crank just fine; all the lights were bright as usual but, no start. Jump from a tow truck and wah-lah. Quick trip to a dealership where the previous owner bought me two new batteries and I haven't had a problem since.

I realize this doesn't explain how your truck finally did start but, perhaps, it's a place to start.

I just had a loose battery cable recently that caused this. Pass side

Morning mainly it wouldnt start. listen to how fast it turns over and try to move the cables. If thats not it then check your batteries. You need to change them both if you do it.

[/ QUOTE ] They will still sound like they are cranking fast..but not enough juice to fire the injectors. The IDM makes 115vdc for the injectors. It takes some juice to run the GPs and fire the injectors too......
Definately look at the batts.. if they are over 4-5 yrs old. I would change them out anyway.

On edit it does sound like a GP issue too,, if it cranks longer after you change the relay,, maybe batteries too?
Ohm out the GPs at the plugs on valve cover gaskets. OUTERMOST two wires on each plug are the GPs. Should have MINIMAL ohms,, less than .5 or so.
If some are high,, they are bad.
GPR test is in Larrys little secrets,, and maybe the FAQ on here, I dont have time to link it sorry,

when glow plugs go bad, you get different symptoms. like lots of white smoke and it kind of kicking on 2 or 3 cylinders.

Both batteries were changed about a year ago. Will check battery cables tomorrow morning. This morning engine cranked for about 10-15 seconds, no start. Cycled the key on and off, then truck fired right up.

I forget to post, that after it starts, will run fine the rest of day, problems only when sitting overnight 12-14 hours.

Could be that your GP Relay is intermittent. Check the stick post "Hard/No Start" at the top of the forum for how to check it.
