Howdy. '99 E350 extended body.

My dad recently bought this and uses it as his plumbing van. 155k miles. We've had or did other service done to it. We're currently running the Motorcraft Power Stroke oil filter and Rotella 15-40.

I was wondering if we could use Mobil 1 and do extended oil changes, like 10k, or higher if possible. I'm new to this though. I understand that filters still need to be changed at the usual interval, but can we go ahead and switch? Do we really need to have the oil analyzed, use a bypass filter, etc?

Thank you, Philip Croff

I would not go with extended oil changes without doing an OA to at least establish a baseline.
Using a bypass will definately let you do that though.

I agree with the above post, additional filtration and frequent analsys, this is why I find it easier to change at 5K.

There are several posts on extended oil changes. If you only want to go to 10,000 miles I would stick with regular oil and do oil samples. I would not bother to change the stock filter. I have never seen a post of one being cloged at 5,000 miles. If you do use MOBIL 1 I would get a bypass filter and run for longer than 10,000 miles as long as you do Oil Samples. I am running a AMSOIL single bypass filter and went over 25,000 on my last change of AMSOIL 5w-30. There are several ways to skin this cat.

I have the AMSOIL By System and 155K on one oil change using OA and filter changes. No Problems and for me this is cheaper than the 3K~6K oil changes.

Sorry for the wait, but thank you for the replies.

By "bypass" filter, is this an extra filter used in line with the stock oil filter, or being used in place of the stock oil filter, like a remote filter?

Are the oil lab tests needed to make sure my engine isn't wearing and contaminating the oil at a high rate?

Ken1, you've got 155,000 miles with filter change and top it off... WOW that would save some money. What did your bypass system cost and how often do you do OA's?

Ken1, I would like more info as well, I am looking at putting dual bypass filters on both my rigs and going with Amsoil in the motor and running gear as well...

I would really consider using only a single by-pass filter in the trucks not the dual by-pass.

the issue in the pass is that the dual head unit takes a long time for normal oil press. to build.

I run the single unit by-pass and so do many others. anyway just food for thought......

I switched to a single bypass filter from the Amsoil BMK-16 dual bypass filter. they use a spring seated check valve on the inlet of the full flow filter to force oil through the restricted bypass filter. This causes an overpressurization of the oil pump outlet and causes the pressure regulating valve to dump oil back to the sump instead of the oil galleries. So basically you run the risk of starving your bearings for oil because it is a restriction to oil flow. It's best to stick with a single bypass filter (Amsoil, oilguard, etc...). In addition the dual bypass system had an small but anoying vibration - not sure if anyone else experienced this issue or not /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif.

Here are some links to other forums that discussed this problem....

Dual bypass problems

which bypass system?

Hope this info helps! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The posts on the bad aspects of the BMK-16 are all interesting. Lot's of opinions and nothing to really measure for comparison. Circular references within the threads that really prove nothing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

What is an appropriate pressure drop across a filter that will allow maximum flow to the bearings in a 7.3L PSD? I bet with the correct information, the spring seated check valve can be adjusted to provide the proper pressure drop. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

What provides the proper pressure drop in a single bypass unit to make sure oil actually goes through the bypass filter. If the restrictions in the full flow filter are not high enough, oil will not flow through the bypass unit. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I have the BMK-16 system for over 160K w/o any problems, with additions of a dual or sindle system you will improve the like of oil and extend drains.

I'm running the oilguard bypass system and I change the regular and bypass filters at 12,000 miles. My oil analysis keep coming up great, so I don't know if or when I'll change the actual Mobil 1 Truck & SUV oil.

Just another opinion but.... I don't feel there IS a SET or MAX number of miles .. OR .. Hours, for oil changes.

It's all about the way the PSD gets used. If it's a Work Truck, under heavy use, thats one thing, If it sets in the driveway, thats another. If it just got back from a 8K, Left to Right Coast trip, Pull'n something ? yet another concideration.

Dino oil ? Synthetic ? Temps, Climate, Dust, Dirt. 4 wheel'n, Stump Pull'n.... Goes on & on.

Oil/Filter changes based on use. Thats the answer. With in reason, by the owner.
