After reading the post concerning 5 gallon diesel containers - what about the aux fuel tanks. Not mentioning a specific brand but I've read that one of the reasons our Diesel fuel tanks are not metal is because the plastic doesn't weep as much, hence less water introduced into the fuel when the tank isn't full. So, how do those of you who have Aux tanks (I don't know of any that are not metal) handle the water condensation when the tanks are not full? Which then begs the next question, if kept full (or even partially full) how do you keep the fuel from becoming stale?

I run a 100 gal aluminum tank in the bed, it's off an International straight frame. I have used this tank in my 03 then 04 and now 07 truck and have never had an issue. BUT, these trucks are are not 6.7L fuel systems so I can't tell you if it condenses enough to present a problem in a 6.7L.

Regarding stale fuel, if your letting the fuel get stale, you probably don't need the tank. I do a fair amount of long haul with mine so it gets used. If I'm going to be around town for a few weeks before the next trip, I try to leave it empty or close to empty. I have never had a problem ( at least so far) with condensation/water in the fuel. I change my filters about every 15K miles, that's it.

If the tank is steel, that is a whole different beast....you want to keep a steel tank full as much as possible.

Another note on stale fuel, it happens but not always with dire consequences. I parked the truck for a year and half and the main tank was 3/4 full. When I put the truck back on the road, the fuel burned off just fine.

Here's the tank I'm talkiing about:

Phil: Thanks for the reply. Have not been able to use my truck and 5th Wheel as much as I'd like. That said when we travel from the 'middle of nowhere' Kansas to New Mexico or Colorado it would be nice to have an extra 30 to 40 gallons on board. Just haven't been able to justify the cost versus the times I'd use such. In any case I was wondering.

I used to fuel jet aircraft and we used a product called Prist which was an antimicrobial solution. Meant to keep the green slime from growing at the water / fuel line in the tanks. Again, thanks for the reply.

I've heard about the diesel growing and requiring treatment but I have never experienced it in a couple million KM's of driving Super Dutys. Either I have been very fortunate or maybe the climate has to be a lot hotter on a long term basis with high humidity or something than we experience here futher north, I don't know.

For 30 or 40 gal on the occasional basis, I would be tempted to buy/build a decent cabinet that can be strapped/bolted into the truck temporarily that would hold half a dozen 5 gallon cans.

Same.
With the cans, I would rotate them out just to be safe. Well same thing with a aux tank. Fill up main tanks with that, then put the new fuel in the aux tank.
Personally I've never seen algae. I think it's more of a pick it up from a bad station, then your infected for life and have to keep a close eye on it lol

We currently travel with two 5-gallon jugs of diesel but I'm reaching that age when the body has started telling the mind (screaming actually) that the body is not that young anymore. Becomes quite a pain (pun intended) to get those 40 pound containers out of the truck and then hold them up while fueling the truck. Oh well, wife just told me to keep doing it, the exercise is worth it :) .
