Hello
I bought this truck a few weeks ago and only got 1 key. The dealership said they would work on getting me the second key but you know how that goes. So I purchased 2 aftermarket keys from eBay which had good reviews and others mentioned. So I went to my local Ford dealer and they squeezed me in, they cut and programmed the 2 new keys for only $40! I got home and tried the new keys and they both start the truck but after a few secs I get "Starting System Fault". I drove the truck around the neighborhood and seems fine but I don't want to get stranded somewhere. I wanted to use the new key as the one I got is very worn.
Any thoughts or comment are appreciated

Did they "program" the keys by erasing all previous keys and then program the 3 keys as fresh new keys? This would take about 30 minutes to do. This is done with their IDS on laptop connected to truck via the VCMII. Or did they have a way to copy one key to the other two?

I'm not fully sure but they had the truck out back for just over a hour. I did inform them that I only had the one original key also asked the service manager if me having the SCT in it and programmed to tow tune would affect anything and he said no it was fine. I may just swing back by there tomorrow and ask about it.

If you shake the aftermarket keys, do they rattle like the chip is loose? I would ask them to erase all the keys and reprogram the PATS again.

I have never had any problems with the aftermarket keys that have the chip in the plastic head. I have 2 or 3 of those handy should I need one.

I made up some flip keys for my 2015 F350 and the chip moved maybe 3/16" or so. When the chip moved (was not glued in it), it gave a Start Fault. Mine did not start. Fortunately i keep a spare key in the console.

Yeah no rattling when I shake them but I drove to dinner tonight and back home with it, it was still saying Starting System Fault but seemed to work fine. Think I'll try the dealership and see what they say.

We have seen quite a few problems with non-OEM keys but not of epidemic proportion. Even OEM keys can be bad. I have seen that too but that is rare.

The truck will not start with an unprogrammed key but there still could be an issue with it, OR there is something else going on. You will want them to perform a self test on the system and make an assessment and not just ask to reprogram the keys.
