I searched on the forum and on Google but couldnt find anything specific to the 7.3.

I went to have my emissions test done (I am in Colorado) last week and the truck passed fine but then failed for "No SES light." The tech guy said it could be as simple as a burned out bulb, or something more complicated.

Does anyone know an easy way to test for the problem aside from tearing the dash apart to test the bulb? Also, is the SES/Check Engine Light supposed to come on everytime you turn the key (if so it must have burned out awhile ago because I don't remember it coming on when I turn the key haha)

Thanks!

Next will be that the inside dome light did not come on at the right time..... fail the rig...

More information on the truck in question..

The SES light should come every time you key on the ignition. Check the bulb. Do something that would set a code.

You can try unplugging the ICP and starting the truck. The truck will start and run, but will set the SES on. If this doesn't happen, you very well should pop the dash and replace bulbs. Sometimes it's not even the bulb, but the holder not making good contact with the plastic circuit. Either way, the dash is not that difficult. On my 99, I can have the cluster in my hands in only 15 minutes.

One note- if you do not have a way to clear DTC's, DON"T unplug the ICP. Golly, you wouldn't want to fail again because of an intentionally set code:icon_rolleyes:

It's likely the bulb - $2 part. I failed for the same reason. YouTube it - there's a video on how to remove the instrument panel. Bulbs twist out but a bit of work to get to.

Mine's a 2000 also - 205k miles. Sounds like the bulb's life is somewhere around 150-200k miles.

Thanks for the help guys. I took the dash out last weekend (which was a lot easier than I was expecting) and found that there wasn't even a bulb in it. So I got a new bulb and put everything back together and it worked fine. Took it to get retested and it passed!

Good deal:thumbsup:. The dash isn't particularly difficult, it just appears that way:lol:
