Just had an OEM 265-75R-16 delaminate, 6" strip around total circumference of a Pirelli Scorpion. 2004 F350, Reg cab, 9900 GVWR, owned for 1 yr and 1 month, 25,700 miles. Tire delaminated under very light load with proper inflation. No apparent road hazard, tire was still inflated for a few minutes after the tread pealed off down to the steel belts. Bottom of rear fender was bent-(folded over) on both ends-front and rear as a result. Contacted dealer the next day, reported the incident-set up an appointment next week to view failed tire and damage. Anyone have an opinion or prior experience in a similar situation? Rick -- N.H.

My wife had a 93 SHO Taurus, first car we bought together, had maybe 23000 on the odometer, rear tire blew very similar to the way you describe.Bent up the rear quarterpanel some, enough to notice, and bent something on the rear suspension,I dont recall what now,but anyways they had the car at the shop for like 3 days before they would do anything. They check the three remaining tires and found all 3 pretty dang close, like maybe 1/2 pd low on one,1/4 pd on the other,...but anyway, both Ford and the tire manufacturer went 50/50 on fixing the car.Ended up costing them about 4000 to fix whatever got bent and the quarterpanel.About a week later,we bought a new car....Make sure nothing other than the fender was damaged.

Those things happen occasionally, possible with any brand tire. There should have been some visible tread separation at some time before it let go, possibly some change in the "feel" of the truck also. The failure can progress very quickly or gradually, I won't speculate on your incident. I had four General 550AS OE tires go gradually on a previous vehicle, they were caught before any let go and replaced by the tire dealer with no questions asked. A Pirelli dealer should be able to help you defray the cost of the fender repairs if your truck dealer is not in a position to do so.

Dealer has agreed to cover $998.00 worth of of damage- (including one new tire, mounted and balanced). No debate or hassel - Factory rep was present with service manager and both agreed to run it through on the 3 year, 36,000 mile Ford warrentee, including the tire, leaving Pirelli out of it. I'm OK with this and happy I didn't get the "run around" Rick, N.H. : /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

How much air pressure? Was this a strip from the middle of the tread with both shoulders left intact or from one side and the other shoulder left intact? Did they break down any of the others to inspect?
