Ok,I suspected a week starter because it was getting to the point that I couldn't try crank my truck but a couple times and the starter would get real sluggish.
So i've replaced the starter and the sol. on the fender(which looks different than the factory one)'Looks more like the typical ford solanoid! Before I started this project I had
the battery"s load tested and was told they were fine.New starter is in with new solanoid on fender and will hardly turn over! I did buy mitsu. unit from auto zone. Now when I try to start it goes good for a second then everything gets real dim and slow.I did notice the Positive Cable started smoking! Am I looking at a bad ground? Thanks

First, you need to clean and tighten that positive terminal that was smoking. Then you need to go around and clean and tighten every battery cable terminal. You mentioned that the batteries were load tested and tested good. The engine should spin 150-300 rpms while cranking. starter load should be no more than 80 amps. Where did you buy the replacement starter? I have put 5 starters on my son's car in the last 10 months. One of them was bad out of the box. One lasted a week, while the others lasted 1 or 2 months. My point? I bought them at Autozone. Good luck, Tim

The autozone starter was what came recomended on this board.Thats why I bought it.Is it a possobility that I got a bad starter.I just came in from checking cleaning and wrenching everything down.I went to crank It ,and it started off good and just killed the batterys.Does it look like I need to take brand new starter back?I've gotten bad parts before its just that this thing is not a easy thing just to swap out! Thanks

Thanks for the reply 94f250!

Had to put one on mine a few months ago and I went back to ford to get one paid more but got a high torque starter for a powerstroke. Cranks a lot faster now. Just an idea instead of going to autojunk.

One more thing to consider, never have batteries load-tested at the same store that they came from.

If they are still under warranty, they will mis-represent the results if they think they may have to adjust out a set of batteries.

Then again, if a store other than the one purchased at tests them, they might say that good batteries were bad, in order to sell you some more.

It is kind of a darned if you do and darned if you don't situation.

Ok I took longriders suggestion and went to a buddys shop and had the batteries load tested again and both batt. were bad!! go figure, but live and learn! The batt. were dated may and june of 2000 they were auto start 24 month batt's,so 6 years later thats not to bad I guess! So i'm going with interstate batt's this time (90.00 apeace 60 month)!I've always had good luck with them.Thats what I run in the race car!
Hopefully this will fix the problem,THanks for your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!If it doesn't then we will talk further.

They probably load tested the batteries in thhe truck, hooked up. The batteries are wired in parallel, so they have twice the load capacity of a single battery. The batteries need to be tested seperately and unhooked with most testers to get the proper results.

Remember to clean the junction connector between the two positive cables. My engine would barely spin over. The junction connector was quite corroded.

After cleaning, the engine spins so fast that I can't count the spins.
