When I fill my tank past the automatic pump shut off, I get a CEL (Check Engine Light).

Has anyone else noticed this?

What does it mean?

Why did Ford vent the tank such that the top 15% of the tank is almost unuseable?

I don't have the code, wish I did. The Scangauge came after we figured out what was causing it and now I stop when the pump shuts off the 1st time.

The engine is never running when I fill the tank.

I put anywhere from 3 - 4 gallons in after the shut off and never had a CEL as a result. I have the 46 gal tank - no mods. Pat

Pat, has your pump been harpooned? Before I did that mod to the fuel pump, it took 10 gallons to fill my tank from the 1st shutoff. After the harpooning it takes 4-5 gallons to fill from the 1st shutoff. So, I'm guessing it would take more than 5-6 gallons to cause my CEL.

It looks like I should just completely fill the tank and find out what the code is.

Stock tank, not modified. I once put 5.5 gal's past the click in and over flowed it but it could have been just not paying attention. It might be interesting to take an extra 5 minutes or so and fill it to the top for sure before my next long run. I wonder if an extra full tank somehow makes the CEL sensor think like its loose or no cap. Do our diesels have the same programming as gas engines for that situation?

No. The diesel vehicles have no evaporative emissions on the fuel tanks or anywhere else for that matter.
