Going to the drag strip for the first time with my truck just for /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif's and got a couple of questions for those of you that have mostly stock trucks and have been racing them.

How much boost and rpm should I try to build at the starting line? I can get about 6-7psi at a little over 2000 rpm.

Planning on leaving on the last yellow. Too late/early?

And does anyone know why they stage drw’s out of the groove? Just curious about that one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Nice title, lol. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If that's the most boost you can build or hold, go with that. Just make sure you manually lock the hubs; not just the dash switch.

Last yellow = correct.

Not sure about the last part. Never heard of that. Maybe the traction is better since all 4 tires are flat on the track instead of 2 in the groove and 2 out? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

thanks, don't think i'll need the 4x4 with the drw's but will use it if i have too.

unless it would help the trucks R/T enough to be worth while /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif
i figure if i can launch in the .510-20 r/t range it won't really matter what it runs in the 1/8 mile /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

i haven't really tried to hold and build more boost, kinda worried about doing some converter/transmission damage trying build too much boost or stall. did try it on dirt once and that's about what i got before the left rear broke loose.(which i thought was strange, but the ground was soft)

Launching in 4wd will give you your best time. It'll allow you to hold more boost while staging and you won't blow the tires away when you leave.

And your reaction time has no effect on your ET.

yes i know r/t have no effect on et, but when i was there saturday nite the best diesel r/t was .510(and that was a stick dodge running mid 9's 1/8 mile) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/vulnerable.gif

no one else was out of the 6's with their r/t. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

just tried it in the 120r and in 2whl all i can hold is 2000 an 6psi before the rears break loose.
may have to try out the 4whl an see if i can do better. not really looking to out run everyone............but if i can tree them should b hard to beat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif (ex-bracket racer turned rancher /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif just new to this diesel racin stuff /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif )
of course that is if the runs truck is consistent times. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

time to leave for test an tune nite.........later with details

You should be able to build up around 17-20 psi on launch. With your setup , I'm guessing it'll run about 9.80-10.05 somewhere in that range. My truck is (was ) setup similar to yours for a while. The best run I got was a 10.08 I think, very consistent. It would have been tough to beat in bracket racing. I got the same time, same MPH almost exactly , every pass. About the only difference was the R/T.
I prefer the pro tree. Very hard to red light with those. It just doent give much time for building boost before you launch. Get you some injectors...that'll put you in the low 9 seconds easily with just a mild set.. My stage 1 split shots put mine down around 9.30 at a low 72 mph, before I got exhaust! Hoping it picked up some mph with the bigger pipes.

You GOTTA use 4x4 to get a good launch, even with the dually.
It'll smokem for a good thirty -40 feet in 2wheel ...even bone stock--if you power brake it hard.

Re: first time at the strip (results)?

Ok the results are in:

In the 120r, 2000 rpm launches in 2 whl are good for a funny car style burnout through 2nd gear down the track.
(big smiles and thumbs up from a lot of folks for that) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

Doing a good burnout is needed even when launching in 4whl dr. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Truck runs very consistent times 10.41-10.45 in the 120r. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Truck et’s and mph faster with the t/c not locked. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif (unplugged sp diesel t/c control)

Shallow staging (just enough to lite the staged lite) and leaving on the last yellow results in consistent 6.40’s r/t’s. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Staging the same and leaving on the 2nd yellow results in a redlite everytime. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Rolling in deeper results in consistent 5.20’s r/t’s. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif
(note to self remember where the sweet spot is)

Truck launches much harder in the 80e than in the 120r. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif(and smokes a lot less)
Truck runs quicker and faster in the 80e. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif
(note to self must need more turbo)

Burnouts makes a big difference, even with a drw truck. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
(the better the burnout the better the truck launches)

Best results were made in the 80e with the t/c box unplugged so here they are
(just the best of both)

80e
.5092 r/t (in deep)
2.2438 60 ft
6.5801 330 ft
10.2720 1/8
66.51 mph

120r
.6384 r/t (normal staging)
2.2944 60 ft
6.6772 330 ft
10.4172 1/8
65.71 mph

Notes to self:
Don’t go racing with more that a ½ tank of fuel.
(don’t need the extra wt.)
Empty out 200-300lbs of tools and chains out of tool box.(see above)
Unplug t/c controller
Do a good burnout
Put in 4 whl dr.
Run in the 80e

Young kid in the ’06 ¾ ton cc sb duramax will pass u at ½ track by 1/2-3/4 sec.
(even when you kill him on the lite)/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Re: first time at the strip (results)?

Looking at your 60ft times I'm assuming you never launched it in 4wd?

Re: first time at the strip (results)?

What rpm/boost were you launching at? I know you're a little bit heavier but with just chip, intake, and exhaust (no trans upgrades) I was cutting high 1.9 60ft and 9.7 eighth miles at 68-69mph all day. Your 60ft has a major effect on your ET in these rigs.

Think you could weigh your truck somewhere? I'd be curious. Maybe it just weighs more than I think. Mine weighed 7500lbs via weigh station scale at the time I made those passes.

Re: first time at the strip (results)?

all were done at 2000 rpm didn't bother to ck what boost was, tryin to cut a lite.

i would be willin to bet i'm bout 1000 lbs more with what all i have in the tool box and a full tank of #2.

our times aren't that far apart 60 ft 2.29 to ur 1.9 =.4, 1/8 10.27 to ur 9.7=.6 considering the weight difference, 1/10 for every 100lbs.

smorris was very close to what i ran, so if i took some weight out i should be where he was.

will try and get er weighed next time i drive it to dallas.

still wondering about getting more air, afe vs what i have or a better turbo. but what am i talking about it's a farm truck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Re: first time at the strip (results)?

i figured about 1000lbs difference, but a half a second is a LOT. A 2000rpm launch sounds about right though.

Re: first time at the strip (results)?

all n all it was still fun to be back at the track /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif (wife won't think so /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif )

so if i can cut a lite i should go a few rounds at the up comming outlaw diesel event the end of this month. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

i guess the worst thing that could happen is i get to see a bunch of fast trucks and have a good time. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

I totally agree! I went to the track last Saturday night for the first time in 15 years and had a blast. I didn't run my truck but I did get a chance to see the Thompsons (BTS) run their rigs. I'll be lining mine up next time I go on the 16th. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif
