Yup, quite normal. It's called the "afterglow" cycle. Supposed to help with warm up and cut down on white smoke at startup.

Do a search on glow plugs and/or controller, and you'll find most of us have no faith in the stock controller. They are prone to fail in the "on" position burning out all the glow plugs...

Thanks for the comeback Zigg! Well the problem must be the controller because I,ve let the truck idle for at least 20 minutes and it still kept cycling .So I went back to my gloplug by pass that you had in your site and if I may say so it,s a great site!. The problem is I,ve checked all of my gloplugs and they all are good ,and they are getting power to them. But the dang thing still wants to not start in the morning unless I squirt it with a small dose of starting fuild. Then for the rest of the day it starts just fine.So I,m just pulling my hair out because for the life of me Im stumped?????.Could it be a bad fuel pump?.Any help would be great .Thanks for your time and help into this matter

TO sle2115! Thhe truck in question is a 85 Ford F250 4x4 6.9.Iv,e changed out the gloplug relay for the right one and still have the starting problem. Now every once in awhile I,ll shoot it with a very small amount of starting fluild and it will start right up. Then the rest of the day it will start up with no problems. So at this time i,m confused and again pulling my hair out the only problem with that i,ve got no hair to pull out ha ha . Thanks for the come back and maybe we can figure out what the heck is the problem?. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

What you have described is quite normal. Someday when you can afford it, you should upgrade to the solid state controller. I'm thinking you are getting air in your fuel lines overnight. Try this first if it applies. At night, if you park with the nose up, turn it around with the nose down. That way there, your fuel can't flow back to the tank. You can get new return line kit from www.dieselpage.com Check the return lines for being dry and brittle. Also look for wetness around the injectors. One more thing. Be very careful using starting fluid on these engines. Good luck, Tim

I would guess the same thing. If it won't start cold, could be glowplugs, but if it starts ok later, glow plugs would still not be working. Ether would fix either problem, but will eventually cause more I have been told.

I also have the solid state controller on mine. If you can ever do it, change it over, mine works very well.
