is there a certain freeze plug that is "notorious" for leaking on the 6.9's? i thought before that my head gasket was shot but i think i'm wrong now. the smell that i thought was coolant in the exhaust i was wrong about (like i said i'm new to diesels). the gunk in my radiator is actually stop leak junk that some one before me put in it (found that out when i drained it today. and my oil isn't milky. it only leaks under pressure also.

No, like any other block, if they're installed correctly they don't leak unless your coolant froze and caused one to leak or pop out. That's what they're there for. Some of the early 6.9 blocks do crack in the area of the block heater hole, rt. side, forward of starter.

I'd run it down the road, build up pressure, then climb over it or under it and see where the leak is.

It just sounds like your rad is shot. Mine was just replaced last summer and when I took it to a shop to see if they could rebuild it they couldn't because the fins had rotted too badly.

Mine had spots all over it where you could see mineral deposits from the seeping coolant.

Another problem might be that your heater core might be leaking too, so your noticing the smell in the cab.
