My front driveshaft is really loose at the CV joint. I can move it probably over an inch up-and-down, side-to-side, etc.

I figure that a driveshaft should be a bit stiffer than that.

Is this normal or is my CV joint gone? All 3 u-joints are brand new.

Thanks :D

If it has that much play when mounted in the truck, it sounds like the centering ball has totally worn out. If it's out of the truck, it'll flop around a bit, but there shouldn't be that much play in that mode either.

You can get a kit to repair it. Getting the ball off the shaft is a real bugger (it's pressed on), but it can be done. The kit has the ball, ball socket, and a spring, IIRC. I think the kit was about the same cost as a u-joint kit. You'll have to remove both u-joints at the CV end, and unless you're lucky, at least one of them will need to be replaced in the process.

Thanks for the info.

I will order the kit on Monday and, in the meantime, will work on getting that ball off of the shaft.

Thanks again!

PS ... does anyone know the part number for the kit? I've been trying to find one online, but have not been able to.

Thanks

Here is a place online that may help. They seem to have what you need.

QUAD 4 x4
Look at these:
QK3008 3 Greaseable U-Joints with Centering Yoke $103.97
QK3010 3 Greaseable U-Joints with Ball Repair Kit $93.97

One more question.

I want to pull my front drive shaft (propeller shaft) and take out my old ball in preparation for the new one.

Can I drive my truck without that shaft or will I damage anything?

Thanks!

You should be fine driving it removed from the truck.

Before disassembly, don't forget to put "indexing" marks on the yokes and the center housing to aid in putting it back together the same way it came apart.

Thanks. We do not have a NAPA here, but I know of one local source that does sell Precision parts so that number will come in handy.

Got it. I used a rattle can and made a line on each end that went through each of the parts that were separated.

If I am lucky, I can get one off of the shelf today. If not, then I should be able to get one overnight and will only have to press on the new ball and reassemble tomorrow after work.

I did not have a blind hole puller so I used a bearing separator/puller. That worked to get the old ball off so I am ready for the new parts to go on.

Thanks all!

CV Joint - Precision #606

Good afternoon

I picked up a CV Joint repair kit today, but because mine was missing parts I do not know how it goes together.

Here are the parts that I have.

washer (larger - OD and ID)
washer (smaller)
seal
ball
3-piece cup
unpainted spring
green spring (seems stronger)

Here is what I figure in terms of order:

1. drive shaft
2. larger washer
3. seal
4. ball (the ball would hold 2 & 3 in place)
5. 3-piece cup
6. smaller washer
7. spring (which one?)

Is this order correct? The order would start at the drive shaft end (where the pin is for the ball) and end up sitting in the cup of the cardan/CV Joint.

I have a PM sent to KLHansen, but I am not sure if he is available today so I though that I'd ask here as well.

Thanks for any help on this.
