I am looking for an upgrade which boost fuel efficiency.. i notice some chips for sale that are around 45 dollars.. they claim to increase efficiency 2-5 mpg and increase power.. i dont want to tear up my transmission, but i would love to boost mpg. is it possible to buy an upgrade package that will increase my fuel efficiency to 28 mpg ? a friend of mine took me riding in his dodge 1 ton dually and he had a upgrade that caused his display screen to read 28 mpg.. is this possible for the 7.3 powerstroke ?

Don't pay attention to the display. It's getting alot more fuel than the display calculator believes.

And no, I'm not aware of any "mileage enhancers" that don't add gobs of power also.

As usual, your right foot has the greatest impact of fuel mileage, no matter the mods you may or may not have.

Take off a lift kit, run stock tires at MAX psi. Shift at 2000rpm or sooner. Light right foot.

No way are you gonna get as good a mileage as the Cummins. They are known to be one of the best light truck diesels as far as that goes. Unfortunately they sound like a tractor. LOL A few can do 21mpg avg.

28mpg. Never gonna happen.... well maybe downhill and with a tail wind. The overhead meter is referred to as the "lie-o-meter".

The only accurate way to measure mpg is to fill up your tank to the same spot each time. Take miles on odometer, divide by gallons. Any computer is not going to give you an accurate result... they only show what "ball park" you're in.

Mine usually says 12-14 mpg and I usually get 15-17mpg (imperial gal) avg. So if I'd calculate mpg with USgal it's not that unaccurate I guess.

If you have a dually it's even worse as you've got 4.11 rear axle gears compared to 3.73. Plus those extra tires/fenders hanging out in the wind.

My new Jetta is getting 43mpg avg city/hwy if that makes you feel any better! :)

Probably not.

Just about any mod that advances the injection timing will improve your fuel economy, whether it is a module, a chip, or a resistor. A 40 hp gain towing chip will improve your fuel economy some, but not as much as a chip running a fuel efficiency program.

Thanks for the replys.. is there any mild chip.. that helps the mpg.. i would be very happy with even 2 mpg better. do yall think that chip on eb ay for 40 bucks would actually work ?
Look up 10k mod or 18k mod. For a few bucks you can do it yourself if that's all you can afford.

You seem persistent to want EASY MPG improvement. (Chip, magic pixie dust) ect... YOUR the largest impact on MPG light foot on take off, coast up to the stop signs/red lights, keep it under 2k rpm on the highway, (1850 or so) if you can run that slow.... and you'll see a huge improvement over 75 mph on the interstate. (Probably that 2-3 MPG your looking for) Intake and exhaust will help some. Chips may a little, but you loose any economy they MAY give you with an even heavier foot from the "New found power" LOL IF you get a chip and change your driving habbits to the same ones above, you may still see that same 2-3 mpg improvement, who knows.
Dave Whitmer is the MPG guru, he has done EVERYTHING possible to his truck, to include lowering it,(Suspension) putting a big black valance on the front bumper, a "Streamlined" tonneau, and who knows what else... I think his absolute best was 25 or so on the highway,,,,,(Maybe 27), but he drives like there is an egg under the gas pedal I believe too, (Not making fun of him, just that is what you have to do for the results to be there)

THAT is how you improve economy on these...

I believe that Dave is doing 24MPG in winter and 27MPG in summer. 3:08 gears and pretty much a stock engine, lowered, etc.

F350welder, what are you getting for MPG now?

First thing is to not rely upon the lie o meter, for the obvious reasons. First things first, I used GPS to see if I'm actually traveling at the speed and distance as indicated by the odometer/speedometer. If you're spot on or close enough, then it's a good idea to log what you do so you can understand if anything you do or don't do is actually accomplishing what you want.

I use Fuelly, and this is my Excursion log. I like data, so I try to put in information about anything I might have added to the tank, what kind of driving or conditions, etc. The trick is that what is added to the tank won't "show up" until the next fill up, but conditions show up immediately.

My lie o meter was pretty close on my Excursion to my hand calculated log when the ECM was stock. Within about .4 to .8 MPG. Was consistently telling me I was getting better than actual MPG, and the speedometer was correct. With the DP Tuner, which I do really like, the lie o meter is further off. I think it adds about 4 to 5MPG vs my actual MPG.

Just shy of 19MPG is my best. Still, that's not bad for a 8000# vehicle with no gear or trailer, and it kills my best in my gas vans of not quite 15MPG.

On my early 99 stock, hand calculated and the computer on the overhead were VERY VERY close, within a couple tenths every time. AT least 6-10 calculations (And I TOOK my time, and filled it to the rim every time I calculated it) After I got the SCMT, and then the TS Chip, it was 4-5 mpg off easily. (Sucked too,, as Dave said, it reads HIGHER! LOL) Oh well....
