Please help! Need to change fuel filter in my '03 7.3. Manual suppliment says simply unscrew the cap counter clockwise. Thanks to some previous threads, I found and opened the fule drain valve/lever so the pressure has now been relieved. Funny that this part was not in said manual! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif The cap is on very tight. I have tried an oil filter wrench with no results.

Is there a tool that I need or am I missing something else the manual suppliment left out? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

I bought one from http://www.dieselpage.com/main.shtml but don't see it listed in their on-line catalog. I think I had to call them. It was around $6.
You can also make one out of PVC pipe. Just cut notches in the bottom of about a 6" piece of pipe that match up with the top of the filter and then drill a hole in the side that will receive a large screw driver. Several here have made and used a homemade one like this.

I built mine out of a 1/4" X 8" flat bar. I measured the slots on the cap and drilled 1/4" holes in the flat bar then put a 1/4" X 1-1/2" bolt in both holes. Makes a great wrench. I keep mine behind my truck seat.

I just use my large channel lock pliers, and a long screwdriver.
Put the open ends of the channel locks into the holes, insert the screwdriver thru the pliers and twist. It works for me.

I just use two crossed screwdrivers.... put the tips in the right places, cross them the right direction.... the lid is off....

FYI:
The PSD oil filter and the fuel filter cap are the same size. Meaning you can use your oil filter wrench to remove the fuel filter cap. That is what I use.

I have a "strap wrench" that I bought at Advance Auto Parts for about $3.00 that works really well, It is a nylon strap on the end of a square bar that a 3/8" sockect ratchtet fits in the other end. As I turn the ratchet, it tightens the strap around the cap until it is tight, and it then has the leverage to spin it off.

I dont think I could get an oil filter wrench around it and still have room to try and turn it either../ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif..seems I remember trying the first time too.
I used a LARGE pair of channel lock pliers,,I mean the handles were about 18" long...they worked fine. DONT put a ton of arm on it when you reinstall the cap. Then I got that nice "Billit" fuel filter cap from BTS when I bought my tranny... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

Regular pair of pliers. Spread the handles apart and place them vertically so that the handles fit down in the grooves towards the outside. Use a crescent wrench around the top of the the pliers where they are fastened together and turn counterclockwise and it's off.

I have Davids (Diesel Innovations) billet filter lid removal tool and it works great and looks cool as well. I used to use the spread channel lock method and only had to scrape some skin off my knuckles one time and called David up and bought one. The oil filter wrench or strap wrench, never worked that well for me.

I take mine off with a an open end wrench and a cresent. Put the open end wrench down in the notches and turn with cresent.

I always just use my hands. Never had any trouble yet. My hands are also all I use on my oil filter.
