Ok, got about 9,000 on the clock and its time to start thinking fuel filters and I have a few questions. My truck is a 2010 6.4 but I have changed the filters on my dads 2003 6.0 and I think they are very similar if not the same, but I have a few questions.

1. I see on the web sites that I have looked at to order filters from that there is a new style and old style filter listed for my truck. Well which one is it and how do I tell?

2. I have read on this forum that you only want to use the ford motorcraft filters (and I agree, use motorcraft on everything else why not stick with what works). Where is everyone getting their filters from and what are you paying?

I use dieselfiltersonline.com If you want Motor Craft, the part# is FD 4617. I follow the recommendations and use Motor Craft. Just my two cents

I was looking at dieselfiltersonline and the updated filters are the 4617 from motorcraft. So i definately want the updated ones and not the 4609 right? Does anyone know if changing them is just like on a 6.0? It looks like it from the outside but I wont get any farther than that until I get filters.

36MM socket fits the fuel and oil filter caps. TQ specs are on the caps. New 0-rings for the caps are included, be sure to use oil on the rings.

For the lower one, open the yellow lever and let is drain some before removing the cap. You will likely take a bit of a fuel bath so be careful. Also the wiring harness makes it difficult. Not fun but do able.

Top side no difference.

Cycle the key to just the on position at least 6 times for attempting a re-start

Be sure to *close* that lever. My tech today did NOT and I made several puddles around town after leaving the Ford store, one each time I turned off the truck. For some reason, it seems like it inactivates that drain while the truck is running.

Cost me US$124 to replace both filters for parts, labor and tax. Plus maybe a gallon?? of diesel lost and a good shirt soaked when I had to quickly crawl under the truck while re-fueling after the panicked manager ran out yelling about my truck overflowing ...

Fun!

Don't do it with a full tank of fuel. The first time I did that, I drained over a gallon and it wouldn't stop; there seems to be some siphoning going on, so I drove it down to a quarter tank for a 2nd attempt, then only about 8oz came out.

Catch it all and pour it back into the tank. No point dumping out perfectly good fuel
