I have the (Gasp!) dreaded gray-painted lines, and it's been said I should replace them due to leaking air into the fuel system.

Is this common with gray injector lines?

How can I tell if they're leaking air into the fuel system?

What do I replace them with?

Thanks in advance.

Actually, the injector lines usually don't leak air. They are the high pressure lines from the injection pump to each injector. The return lines are cloth covered rubber lines with metal spring clips and they connect all the injectors at the top with plastic caps. Those are the culprits that leak air. You can buy a kit that has new caps, o-rings, clips and hoses. Symptoms will be fuel leaks and hard starting due to air in the system.

Yup. Even though you cant see fuel leaking out, air might possibly be entering the system. mwfi.com was a kit for $35, I just bought a kit for the '85.

If air is entering the system, it will cause all the air to drain back to the tank and will lead to longer cranking time to re-prime the engine.
