I assume you've fully diagnosed your sending unit to determine you need to change it. It's pretty spendy to just change on a whim, and I've not heard of many going bad. Usually it's a wiring issue or something like that (much cheaper to fix). The sending unit shows the instrument cluster a resistance of 15 ohms for empty and 160 ohms or more for full, so a broken wire would make the gauge read full all the time. I have experienced a stuck float a bunch of times, but haven't had that issue since I quit drag racing the truck. The launch would slam the float up into the recess and it would stick there. You should at least check the resistance at the sending unit plug.
But in any case, if you do open the tank, as 79jasper suggested, definitely do the hutch mod (eliminating the mixing unit on the pickup foot and the quick connect fuel line fittings) and also harpoon it (cut the projections off the filler and vent pipes that stick into the tank). For the latter, a PVC pipe cutter (shear type pliers) makes quick work of it.
