I am considering trading my 2003 Excursion with a 6.0 for a 2009 F 250 Crew cab with the short box. It has an automatic with the 6.4 L and 3.55 gear ratio. What kind of fuel mileage can i expect pulling about 10,000 lbs? Currently my 6.0 gets about 10 to 13 mpg driving at 66 mph, and the 10 mpg is with stiff head or side winds. My Excursion has about 95,000 miles and the 2009 truck has about 35,000 miles. Right now the Excursion or the truck would be used exclusively for towing.

I have pretty much the same truck your looking at only its a 2010 w/ a 8ft. box. I tow a 10500 lb. 5th wheel and always use the Ford fuel additive. The truck has the 11b23 flash on it and get aprox. 13 mpg towing. I try to use the cruise control as much as I can and make sure the tire psi. is where it should be. (truck and trailer) you could get better or worse depending on what part of the country your driving in. It does a great job for me. also Im looking at around 18/20 mpg on the highway when not pulling. If you end up getting the 6.4 make sure to read all the owners materal. I bought this truck coming from a 6.0 like you have and the truck needs to have a little more of a eye kept on it. But as I said it pulls like a champ. Good luck with your decision.

I don't know what you use to calculate MPG but those figures seem very optimistic. I get 13.5 on country roads 8-9.5 towing 15k and 15-16 HWY.
I have towed many types trailers and the thought of 13 MPG while doing so is fantasy. I don't even get that in the winter unloaded.

Ahhh I usually only get 9 something towing 10000 lbs and has been as low as low 8.x towing 12000. Never seen over 10 towing anything heavier than about 5000 lbs. And I usually drive as easy as possible and rarely if ever even run 75mph. The truck pulls well and is a lot more comfy than my 7.3 so all and all am glad I got it. Now I just need the 5 year warranty to expire!

Well, if the 13+ holds up, that is definitely the exception. I get between 8 - 10mpg towing my 11,000 5th wheel. But I do get between 15 - 17 not towing...mostly highway type driving. But I sure do like my truck...no matter the mileage!

All,

My 2008 with 6" lift (factory wheels and tires when towing) DPF delete, SCT Tuner set to performance, and AFE Stage 2 cool air:

14k 5th Wheel pulled 2200 miles - West Texas, high winds 6-7 MPG
- Central US - Mainly Flat 8-9 MPG
- Eastern US - Rolling hills 7-9 MPG

Just did this trip a couple months back..

With my 37's on 20's - I get about 12-13 around town with no trailer and maybe 14-15 on the highway. When I have the stock wheels and tires on the truck with no trailer, I can get nearly 19 on the highway and about 15 around town.

Thanks,
Wilaircraft

With my 20' enclose trailer the biggest factor seemed to be winds. In one day I drove from Atlanta to Panama City and back. I spent 11 hours driving. By the way it is a very comfortable truck to spend a lot of time in. On the way down I was empty and got 10 mpg. On the way back with about 4,000lbs of crap I got 11 mpg. I'd say at 10000lbs you are looking at 9-10 mpg.

I just got back from a Myrtle Beach. 1768 miles total on the trip. Fuel mileage was anywhere from 8.4 to 9.8 mpg. The 8.4 was on the trip home going through the Smokey's. Got caught in stop and go traffic on that 7% grade on I26. I hate that climb!! This was my first long trip with the 6.4. MPG's wheren't much better than my '02 V10, but the towing experience was soo much better.
