I have what appears to be a small puddle of fuel on top of my 97 PSD behind the fuel filter cover. I thought I'd seen mention of this before, but I am unable to find it.

I can't tell where it is coming from. The truck seems to have lost a little power recently, but when checked a few months ago (not more than a couple hundred miles back) I was told the injectors and everything else seemed to be in good shape.

Any ideas you can offer would be most helpful. Also, any decent books out there for a diesel newbie that will help me identify and repair some of these issues?

Thanks in advance!

Puddling behind the cansister could be the hoses, or the fuel pump. In light of the loss of power, the fuel pump is the likely culprit. Clean it up the best you can, and see if you can find where it is coming from. If it leaks from the weep hole on the bottom of the pump, its due to be replaced. Griz has an excellent write up on all things fuel related in the valley by Sam Miller, if you do a search you should be able to find it. I replaced my pump using those same directions, but I can't seem to find them now. Hope this helps.

It is most likely the fuel pump weep hole is leaking but it could also be the fuel canister or a hose. Like BEECHBM69 said, clean up the valley the best you can and see if you can find the leak. If not, try tying a rag around the bottom of the fuel pump and go for a short drive...10-15 minutes is about right. Check the rag to see if it is wet. If not see if the moisture is ahead of the pump of behind the pump. If it is ahead of the pump, then check the hoses and the canister. If it is behind, check out the banjo nut. If you need an excellent article by Sam Miller that tells you everything you need to know about replacing the pump just send me a PM with your email address and I send it to you.

My guess would be the fuel pump is weeping fuel in the valley, usually also a clue that you have a wore fuel pump that may be weak causing poor performance. Put a gauge on the scrade valve and see what kind of pressure you have at idle, should be 40-70

I had one of the blue hoses start leaking, the one on the bottom of course. I used brake clean to clean and dry the valley of death then used a mirror and flashlight to get a good look down in there, that seemed to work good.

Good luck!!

Where is the schrader valve? I looked and can't see one.
Thanks,

Yes...look on the driver's side of the fuel filter canister and you'll find the FPR...it has a schrader valve on it. Probably what you are looking for.

Okay, I'll look again. I've cleaned the FPR screen a few times, so I should be able to find the valve easy enough.
Thanks,
Chris

Thanks for the suggestions. I have to take the truck on a little trip this weekend and will try to check it out before then, if not, it'll hopefully limp along until next weekend. I really appreciate the input.
